Wastewater is "used water from any combination of domestic, industrial, commercial or agricultural activities, surface runoff or stormwater, and any sewer inflow or sewer infiltration. Why we have treated waste water? • The major aim of wastewater treatment is to remove as much of the suspended solids as possible before the remaining water, called effluent, is discharged back to the environment. As solid material decays, it uses up oxygen, which is needed by the plants and animals living in the water. Techniques
Biological water treatment
Physical water treatment
Chemical water treatment
Biological water treatment • When water is used for drinking or cleaning.it should be cleaned so that there are no contaminants which can effect the human health.for this purpose ,biological water treatment is used in which microorganisms especially play an important role. They decompose the waste water biochemically or they break down the organic material and improve the quality of water. So they it can be used domestically. Biological waste water divided into two categories • Aerobic process • Anaerobic process Aerobic process • In this processs, bacteria degrade or eat organic matter and convert it into in carbon dioxiode which can be used by plants for their growth . Oxygen is used during aerobic process. Anaerobic process • In this process ,fermentation process is used to ferment the sludge or waste at specific tempreture.Oxygen is not used in this process. Physical water treatment • In this method physical methods is used in cleaning the waste water and making its quality better. In this method no chemical and biological process involved. There is a prominent method for physical water treatment called sedimentation. Physical water treatment • Sedimentation: • Sedimentation is a process of suspending out the insoluble heavy particles from waste water. When the insoluble material sattle down at the bottom of the water .pure water is removed. Physical water treatment • Filtration Is used to filter out the contaminants. Special kind of filters are used to pass sewage or waste water due to which the insoluble prticles or contaminants are separated.some waste water contain grease and oil on there surface, they can remove easily from the surface. Chemical water treatment • As the name shows to clean the water or sewage. • Chemicals are used. Chemical water treatment • Chlorination Most commonly used chemical is chlorine and the method in which chlorine is used called chlorination.chlorine is oxidizing chemical used to kill the bacteria which decomposes water by adding contaminants in it. Chemical water treatment • Ozone Another oxidizing disinfectant called ozone. Ozone is used to purify the waste water .these chemicals are very useful as they disallow the bacteria to reproduce in the water thus making the water pure.
