DESCRIBING PROPERTIES
OF MATERIALS
• In describing properties of materials, it is important
to recognize the observable characteristics based
on its physical appearance.

• Some of these observable characteristics are color,

shape, and size.
How will you describe the
material below?
DESCRIBING PROPERTIES
OF MATERIALS
• Most garden hose is long and slender
to allow water to travel long distances
from the faucet as its source, to
different areas in the garden.

• Often, it is green so that it

compliments to the color of the grass
when laid on the ground and not in
use.
WHAT IS TEXTURE?
Texture  is the way that something
feels when touched.
How will you describe
the texture of the given
materials?
DESCRIBING PROPERTIES OF
MATERIALS
• Cleaning materials like a brush,
dishwashing sponge, and steel wool
have rough surfaces to be able to
remove dirt on the materials in
which they are in contact.

• However, the handles of cleaning

brushes have rugged surfaces to
allow hands to have a better grip on
when using them.
WHAT IS THERMAL
CONDUCTIVITY?
Thermal conductivity is the ability of
an object to allow heat to pass through
it.

Conductors are materials that allow

heat to pass through them easily.

Insulators are materials that do not

allow heat to pass through them
easily.
How will you
describe the thermal
conductivity of the
given material?
DESCRIBING PROPERTIES OF
MATERIALS
• A casserole is made up of a metal
body but the handles are made
up of plastic.
• Metals allow food inside it to be
cooked.
• The handles of cooking pans and
utensils are made up of wood or
plastic which are insulators.
Conductor or Insulator?
Insulator - Wood and wood-base Fabrics are great insulators and
materials are by nature relatively will keep your body warm over an
good heat insulators. extended period of time

Gold is used as a contact metal in the

electronics industry as it is a good
conductor of both electricity and heat. Insulator
Insulator – (i.e
electrical tape)
WHAT IS TRANSPARENCY?
Transparency is a property of a material that describes the
ability of light to pass through.

Materials that allow light to pass through are called

transparent materials.

Materials that do not allow light to pass through are called

opaque materials.

Materials that allow some light to pass through but also

absorbs some light are known as translucent materials.
EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS WITH
DIFFERENT TRANSPARENCIES
A drinking glass is transparent while a medicine bottle is
opaque. Stained glass windows are translucent materials.

tinted car windows

WHAT IS
ABSORBABILITY?
Absorbability refers to the ability of a material to
absorb or take in certain materials, usually liquids, in a
gradual manner.

Waterproof materials repel liquids, specifically water.

(Nonabsorbent)
OTHER PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
• Sharpness is the quality of being sharp.

• Flexibility is the ability of a material to be

bent without breaking.
• Hardness is the condition of being rigid
and unbreakable.
• Luster is the ability of an object to shine
when light strikes on it.

IDENTIFYING
USEFUL AND HARMFUL
MATERIALS
WHEN IS A MATERIAL
CONSIDERED USEFUL?

A material is said to be useful when it

served its main purpose and people
benefit from it.
EXAMPLES OF USEFUL
MATERIALS
• Household products like detergents, bleach,
and soap are often used for cleaning.

• These materials have cleaning properties

that could remove stains and other dirt
from clothes and other materials.

• They contain surfactants that lift the dirt

from a material, which make it easier to
wash away.
EXAMPLES OF USEFUL
MATERIALS
A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a
mixture of gas in liquid form and is stored in
a metal canister under high pressure.

It is a flammable material that could easily

catch fire and burn.

LPG serves as a fuel for stoves which are

essential for cooking.
EXAMPLES OF USEFUL
MATERIALS
Pans are used for cooking food.

The high conductivity of metals makes it

an appropriate material for creating cooking
pans.

It also has insulated handles, which

prevents the person from getting hurt when
they touched the hot handles.
EXAMPLES OF USEFUL
MATERIALS
Most houses have windows made of
glass.

Glass are known to be transparent,

which allows light to pass through it.

Its transparency provides natural
lighting inside the house.
Look at each illustration and describe the
property that makes it useful.
Identify if the statement is
true or false.
1.Household products like muriatic
acid and pesticides are safe to taste
or smell.
2. Broken glasses may cause cuts when
accidentally touched or stepped on.
3. Some household products with
chemical ingredients can cause skin
irritation when exposed for a long time.
What Is a Lie?

A lie is something that is not real,

or true.

If someone said that the

sun was cold, they would
be telling a lie.
Are These Things True or Untrue?
Are these statements true or untrue?
Click on each statement to reveal the answer.

Grass is blue. Rain is wet. Fire is cold.

Winter is cold. Pigs can fly. Cats have tails.

What can we learn from this story?
There was once a boy who looked after sheep near the village.
The boy was often bored so one day he decided
to play a trick on the villagers to amuse himself.
“Wolf! Wolf!” he cried at the top of his voice.
The villagers came rushing up the hill to save the sheep,
but when they got there, there was no wolf to be seen and
the boy laughed at them.
“You must not tell lies!” said the villagers angrily, and they went back
down to the village.
Soon the boy was bored again so he shouted “Wolf! Wolf!” and the
villagers rushed up the hill to save the sheep.
The boy laughed at them. “You must not tell lies!” said the villagers
angrily, and they went back down to the village.
Later that day, while the boy was watching his sheep,
a wolf really did come into the field.
The boy cried and cried, “Wolf! Wolf!”
No one came to help and the wolf ate all the sheep.

No one will believe a liar,

even when he is telling the truth.
Task 1
What Did You Learn from the Story?
How does it feel when
people lie to us?

Why is it important to tell the

truth?

Why do people lie?

Task 2
How does it feel to tell the
truth?

Everyone has to make choices. If

we have done something wrong,
the best thing we can do is tell the
truth.
A note tells us how high or low, and how long a
sound should be.
The rest is the opposite of the note. It represents the
duration of a pause or stop. A rest has no sound.
