OSMOSIS &
DIFFUSION
EVIDENCE FOR THE PARTICULATE
THEORY OF MATTER
DIFFUSION

Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of higher

concentration to an area of lower concentration until they are
evenly distributed.

This happens because the particles are in constant motion.

DIFFUSION

Particles move from

where they were in high
concentration until they
are even distributed

THIS OCCURS BECAUSE THEY ARE IN

CONSTANT MOTION
OSMOSIS

Osmosis is a special case of diffusion.

It is the movement of water molecules from an area where

they are in high concentration to an area where they are in
lower concentration

THROUGH A DIFFERENTIALLY/SELECTIVELY
PERMEABLE MEMBRANE
OSMOSIS

Selectively permeable
membrane allows some
substances to pass through
but not others.

Contains tiny pores that

only water molecules are
able to pass through.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
OF OSMOSIS

● Pest control - Slugs and Frogs

● Preserving food items - Salt fish, dried fruit → Water is

withdrawn from the cells and so is not available for the
chemical reactions in the cell which cause decay
DIFFUSION EXPERIMENT

Which gas is heavier? Which one will diffuse along the

tube at a faster rate?

Cotton soaked in Cotton soaked in

ammonia (17g/mol) Hydrochloric Acid
(36g/mol)
1. What is the use of litmus paper?

2. What is the name of the compound formed in the tube

between ammonia gas and hydrochloric acid gas? (seen
as a white ring)

3. What is the relationship between the mass of the gas

and the rate at which they diffuse
