Scientific classification
Domain Bacteria
Phylum Bacillota
Class Bacilli
Order Bacillales
Family Bacillaceae
Genus Bacillus
Bacillus includes symbiotic (sometimes reffered
to as endophytes) as well as independent
species . two pathogenic species are medically
significant:Bacillus anthracis –which causes
anthrax and Bacillus cereus which causes food
poisoning
Species of bacillus
Bacillus:
Acidicola,
acidipurence,agri,akibai,lentus,aerius,ant
hracis,albus,macyae,malacinensis,alevi,m
acerans,arsenicus,muralis.etc
Structure of bacillus
Structure of Bacillus cont..
The largest Bacillus known is Bacillus
magaterium of about 1.5um.
They commonly occur in chains.
Their cellwalls test positive for the gram test.
They have a second barrier between the
bacteria and its environment and at the same
time maintains the rod shape and withstand
the turgor pressure generated by the cell.
The cell wall is made of teichoic and
teichuroic acid.
Isolation and identification of bacillus
Culturin method is the method used during
the process of identification and isolation.
Sampled soils are dissolved in distilled
water, the solutions are then filtred and
hot shock applied to kill off the
vegetative cells leaving off viable
primary colonies
The specimens are then smeared over
agar plates to confirm the identity of
the bacteria.
Characteristics of Bacillus spp on culture
medium.
Cultured colonies are usually large,
spreading and irregularly spaced.
Under a microscope ;bacillus cells
appear as rods and a substancial
portion of the cell usually contains oval
endospores at the end making their
ends bulge
Ecological and clinical significance.
Bacillus species are usually umbiquitous in
nature,eg.in soil
They can occur in extreme temparatures
eg.Bacillus thermophilus.and in high salt
concentrations eg.Bacillus haloduorans.
They are very commonly found as endophytes in
plants where they play a critical role in their
immune system and nitrogen fixation.
Bacillus thuringineisis produces toxins that kill
insects
Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax disease in
animals.
Some bacillus are important industrically as they
are used in the production of antibiotics enzymes
and are also used for research purposes
