    Metamorphism is the process of changing the materials that make up rocks due to exposure to heat and pressure. There are four main influences on rock behavior during metamorphism: 1) Compression causes rocks to squeeze against one another with stress directed inward, 2) Tension causes rocks to pull apart and separate in opposite directions, 3) Shearing can cause portions of a plate to break away in different directions, making the plate smaller, and 4) Confinement compacts the crust, making it look smaller.
