COORDINATED FUNCTIONS of the

REPRODUCTIVE, ENDOCRINE,
and NERVOUS SYSTEM
LESSON 1
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
• the organs and glands in the body that
aid in the production of new offspring

FUNCTIONS:
• Production of gametes
• Fertilization
• Development and nourishment of new individual
• Production of reproductive hormones
Male Reproductive System
Functions:
• Produce sperm
• Transport sperm into the body of the
female
• Produce testosterone (male sex
hormone)
Parts of the Male Reproductive System
PENIS - male organ used for urination and
sexual intercourse
SCROTUM – a pouch of skin that holds
and helps to protect the testicles.
TESTES - oval organs about the size of very
large olives that lie in the scrotum, secured at
either end by a structure called the spermatic
cord.
EPIDIDYMIS - a long, coiled tube that
stores sperm and transports it from the
testes.
VAS DEFERENS - a tiny muscular tube in the
male reproductive system that carries sperm
from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
URETHRA - tube through which urine
leaves the body. It empties urine from the
bladder.
SPERM CELL - gametes (sex cells) that are
produced in the testicular organ (gonad) of male human
beings and animals.
Female Reproductive System
Functions:
• Produce and maintain eggs
• Transport eggs to site of fertilization
• Provide favorable environment for
development of offspring
• Moves offspring to outside (birth)
• Produce female sex
hormone (progesterone and estrogen)
Parts of the Female Reproductive System
OVARIES - small, oval-shaped glands
that are located on either side of the
uterus.
FALLOPIAN TUBES - narrow tubes that are
attached to the upper part of the uterus and serve
as pathways for the ova (egg cells) to travel from
the ovaries to the uterus.
UTERUS - the hollow, pear-shaped organ in a
woman's pelvis where a fetus (unborn baby)
develops and grows.
CERVIX - The lower, narrow end of the uterus
that forms a canal between the uterus and
vagina.
Functions of Cervix
• Allow menstrual blood
flow into the vagina
• Direct the path of the
sperm into the uterus
so fertilization may
occur
• Becomes blocked by
mucus when pregnant
to avoid infections
VAGINA - a muscular canal that extends from
the vulva to the neck of the uterus (cervix).
VAGINA- a muscular canal that extends from
the vulva to the neck of the uterus (cervix).
Functions:
• Passage of menstrual
blood
• Birth canal
• Sexual intercourse to
introduce the sperm
VULVA- the area of skin that surrounds the
urethra and vagina, including the clitoris and labia.
Functions:
• The mons veneris and labia
protects the clitoris and
vestibule
• The clitoris contains sensory
receptors that send
information to the sexual
response area of the brain
• The vaginal opening is the
boundary between the internal
and external genitalias
