ENERGY, WORK

AND POWER
Write YES if the illustration shows an example
of work and write NO if it is not.
TWO TYPES OF ENERGY
• Kinetic energy
• Potential energy
KINETIC ENERGY
 The energy of a moving object is called energy of motion
or kinetic energy (KE).How the equation of KE is derived
is shown in the student’s module. The KE of an object
depends on its mass and velocity. What will happen to the
KE of an object if its mass is doubled but the velocity
remains the same? The KE will be doubled. How about if
the velocity is doubled but the mass remains the same?
The KE is proportional to the square of the speed, thus if
the speed is doubled, the KE will be quadrupled.
KINETIC ENERGY
• For example, if a an object
with a mass of 10 kg (m =
10 kg) is moving at a
velocity of 5 meters per
second (v = 5 m/s), the
kinetic energy is equal to
125 Joules, or (1/2 * 10
kg) * 5 m/s2.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
Work is done in lifting an object. When work is done on an object,
energy is transferred to it. Thus, an object lifted from the ground gains
energy. Since the work is done against the force of gravity, it is called
gravitational potential energy or simply potential energy (PE). The
force of gravity also acts on objects falling to the ground. As an object
falls, the potential energy decreases because it is transformed to
become the kinetic energy of the object.
The gravitational potential energy - is the energy due to its position.
This energy depends on the mass and height of the object. The height
can be measured relative to an assigned level. But usually, the
common reference level is the ground.
POTENTIAL ENERGY
• This 2 kg hammer is
0.4 m up. What is it's
PE?PE = m g h.= 2 kg
× 9.8 m/s2 × 0.4 m.=
7.84 kg m2/s2= 7.84 J.
WORK
• Measure of energy transfer that occurs
when an object is moved over a distance
by an external force at least part of which
is applied in the direction of the
displacement.
WORK DONE
• Example: 10 Newton of force is applied on a
body which displaces it by 2 meters. Calculate
the work done by using the formula for work.

Solution:

• To find: Work done Given: Force (F) = 10N

• Displacement (d) = 2 m

• Using Formula For Work

• W = F. d

=(10)(2)

= 20Nm
POWER
• time rate of doing work or delivering energy,
expressible as the amount of work done W, or
energy transferred, divided by the time interval
t—or W/t.
POWER
• Here, we can take t = 60
s . Power is equal to work
divided by time. In this
example, P = 9000 J / 60 s
= 150 W . You can also
use our power calculator
to find work – simply
insert the values of power
and time.
Activity
Instruction: Identify if there is work write your answer
in your own notebook
COMPUTATION
1. A book which has a mass of 1 kg is on the floor. If the book is
lifted from the floor to the top shelf which is 2 meters from the
floor, how much work is done?
2. A 1000 kg car has a velocity of 17 m/s. What is the car’s
kinetic energy?
3. If the same 1.0 kg book is lifted 0.5 m above the table, but the
table top is 1.0 m above the floor, what would be the potential
energy of the book if the reference level were the floor?
