HISTORY

Arthur H Compton (1892-1962, citizen of the United States) discovered the

Compton effect in 1922. when he was studying how x-rays were scattered
when they hit some materials. His research with the scattering of X-rays
proved Einstein's photon theory correct, and awarded him the Nobel Prize in
1927. He was a pioneer in research with X-rays and cosmic rays. He said that
a photon that hits an electron will be scattered by the electron without
losing energy. However, the other peak wavelengths are highly dependent
on the change in angle.

EKSPERIMENT OF COMPTON

The first experimental demonstration of this type of

scattering was carried out by Arthur Compton in 1923. A
diagram of the setup for this experiment is shown in Figure
1. In this experiment a beam of X-rays was dropped on a
scattering target, which Compton chose the element
carbon. (Although no scattering target contains truly free
electrons, the outermost or valence electrons in most
matter are so weakly bound to their atoms that they
behave like nearly "free" electrons. The kinetic energy of
these electrons in an atom is minuscule compared to the
kinetic energy K. , which electrons gain in this scattering
process). The energy of the scattered X-rays is measured by
a detector that can rotate at various angles

MEANING OF EFFECT
COMPTON

Compton effect (also called the Compton scattering) discovered by

Arthur Holly Compton, is the scattering of a high frequency photon
after an interaction with a charged particle, usually an electron. If it
results in a decrease in energy (increase in wavelength) of the photon
(which may be an X-ray or gamma ray photon), it is called the
Compton effect. Part of the energy of the photon is transferred to the
recoiling electron. Inverse Compton effect occurs when a charged
particle transfers part of its energy to a photon.
Compton scattering
Compton scattering is an example of the
inelastic scattering of light by free-
charged particles, where the wavelength
of diffused light differs from incident
radiation. Inelastic scattering is a
fundamental scattering process in which
the kinetic energy of event particles is
not conserved (in contrast to elastic
scattering).

scattered photons have longer wavelengths λ ‘and momentum p’. Electrons bounce with
pe momentum. The direction of the scattered photon forms an angle Ρ with the direction
the photon comes.)
