PROBLEM:
Using 80 mm x 300 mm of wood with Fc = 15.4 MPa, Fb = 24 MPa,,
check if the design is adequate for the w = 400 N/m (DL+LL) as
shown in the figure.

The unfactored maximum moment in member AD is,

Design used, 80 mm x 300 mm (65 mm x 265 mm)

Design Check 1: Compression on Net Area
This condition occurs at the end of the member. For this load case, the axial load P is
caused by dead load plus snow load (D+L); therefore, the load duration factor C D is 1.15.
The unfactored compression stress applied is,

Solve the net area,

Hence,
At support locations, there can be no buckling, therefore, Cp = 1.0
Solving the allowable compression stress parallel to the grain:

Design Check 2: Compression on Gross Area
This condition occurs at the midspan of the member. The axial load P for this load
case is also caused by dead load plus snow load (D+L); therefore, the load duration
factor CD=1.15. The unfactored applied axial compression stress is,

Unbraced length,

For y-y buckling, the unbraced length,

Solving the slenderness ratio,

Hence (le/d)max = 13.21

Solution:
The bucking modulus of elasticity is,

C=0.8 (visually graded lumber)

The Euler buckling stress about the weaker axis (i.e., the axis with higher slenderness
ratio), which for this problem happens to be the x-x axis, is

Design Check 3: Bending Only
This condition occurs at the point of maximum moment, and the moment is
caused by the uniform distributed gravity load on the top chord (member AD), and
since this load is the dead load plus the snow load, the controlling load duration
factor is 1.15, The unfactored maximum moment in member AD is

The unfactored compression stress applied in member due to bending is

The allowable bending stress is,

The interaction equation for combined concentric (axial) load plus uniaxial bending

Design Check 4: Bending plus Axial Compression Force The reader should note that in the
interaction equation above, the Euler critical buckling stress about the 𝑥– 𝑥 axis, 𝐹𝑐𝐸𝑥, is what
is required, since the bending of the truss top chord member is about that axis. The effective
length for 𝑥– 𝑥 axis buckling is;
Slenderness Ratio:
Solution:

Substituting the parameters above into the interaction equation yields,

Hence, 80 mm x 300 mm is adequate for the truss top chord with a span of 3 m.
