INTRODUCTION

• Khodri Hydroelectric Power Plant is situated in the Tons River at

Ichari in the Dakpathar town of Dehradun district in Uttarakhand.
The power project is commissioned in 1984 with a total installed
capacity of 120 MW.

• The State of Uttaranchal in exercise of the power granted to it under

section 63(4) of the State Re-
Organization Act, 2000, formed two separate companies in power
sector-

Uttaranchal Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd. – For generation of Hydro electricity

in the state.

Uttaranchal power Corporation Ltd. – For transmission and

distribution of electricity in the state.
SALIENT FEATURE
GENERATOR

• Generator is a device that converts mechanical

energy into electrical energy. It plays a crucial role
in various applications like produce electricity for
distribution to homes, businesses, and industries.
• In Khodri power plant Generators are using for
generating electricity for large-scale distribution to
portable generators providing backup power during
outages.
• There are total four Generator in the khodri power
plant
GENERATOR PROTECTIONS

1.GENERATOR DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION

• Generator differential protection is a critical

element of the electrical protection system in a
power plant. It is designed to detect and isolate
faults that occur within the generator stator winding.
The primary purpose of generator differential
protection is to prevent damage to the generator and
ensure the safety of the power plant's equipment and
personnel.
• Generator differential protection is a fundamental
safeguard in power plants to ensure the reliable and
2. GENERATOR BACK-UP PROTECTION

Generator backup protection is a crucial aspect of the

overall protection scheme in a power plant. It involves a
set of protective relays and devices that are designed to
respond to faults and abnormal conditions in the
generator and its associated systems when primary
protection systems fail or are insufficient. The primary
goal of backup protection is to prevent catastrophic
damage to the generator and to maintain the stability
and integrity of the power plant's electrical system
RELAY
S
Relays are the switches which aim at closing and
opening the circuit electronically as well as
electromechanically.

Relay works on two main operating principles:-

• Electromagnetic Attraction
• Electromagnetic Induction

The heart of the line protection panel consists of

protective relays. These relays are electronic devices
that continuously monitor electrical parameters, such as
current, voltage, and frequency, on the transmission or
distribution lines.
EXCITATION PANEL
Its primary function is to provide the necessary field
current to the generator's rotor winding, which creates a
magnetic field and induces voltage in the stator winding.

Excitation Control: The primary purpose of the

excitation panel is to control the strength of the
magnetic field in the generator. By varying the field
current supplied to the rotor winding, the excitation
system can control the output voltage and,
consequently, the power generated by the generator.

Protection: Excitation systems often include protection

features to safeguard the generator. These protections
can include overcurrent protection, overvoltage
protection, and under-excitation protection to prevent
damage to the generator in case of faults or abnormal
conditions.
BUS-COUPLER

• A bus coupler, in the context of electrical power

systems, is a device used to connect two or more
parallel electrical buses or sections of a power
distribution system. It is typically employed in
substations, switchyards.

• The primary function of a bus coupler is to provide a

means to transfer electrical power between the
buses while ensuring safety and proper
coordination.
PROTECTION OF SUBSTATION

A. Lightning Arrestors
A lightning arrestor is a device used in
power systems and telecommunications systems to
protect the insulation and conductors of the system
from the damaging effects of lightning.
Transformer Protection
Transformers are totally enclosed static devices and
generally oil immersed. Therefore, chances of fault
occurring on them are very easy rare.
