 THE з іменниками + прикметниками /

числівниками
Артикль THE завжди використовується, якщо перед
іменником стоїть:
 1. Порядковий числівник: the first, the second, the third, the
next, the last, the previous, the following
• I will get off at the next stop.
• My office is on the first floor.
 2. Прикметник найвищого ступеня: the best, the biggest, the
worst, the most important, the least interesting
• The voice is the best music.
 THE з групами людей

 Артикль THE може вживатися із прізвищами, коли йдеться

про сім’ю як про групу.
• The Smiths love to vacation in Italy.
• I live next door to the Johnsons.
 Крім цього, THE ставиться перед прикметниками, які
позначають групи людей. Наприклад, літні, багаті, сліпі.
Якщо такі слова виступають просто як прикметники, що
описують когось, артикль перед ними не ставиться.
• He is elderly — Він похилого віку.
• The organization helps the elderly — Організація допомагає
людям похилого віку.
 Використання артиклів з назвами напрямів і
сторін світу
 Якщо слово, яке визначає напрямок (north, west, southeast, left, right) слідує у реченні відразу за
дієсловом, артикль не потрібен:
• They drove south all day.
• Turn right and drive 3 km.
 Артикль THE потрібен:
 1. Якщо слово, яке визначає напрямок, положення: (the north (північ), the south (південь), the east (схід),
the west (захід), the southeast (південний схід), the left (ліво), the right (право), the top of (вершина,
зверху), the end of (кінець), the beginning of (початок), the middle of (середина), the bottom of (знизу,
дно) слідує у реченні відразу за дієсловом з прийменником:
• Our house is in the west.
• The supermarket is on the left.
• Write your name at the top of the page.
• The beginning of the film was not very good.
• My house is at the end of this street.
• The table is in the middle of the room.
• Do you drive on the left or on the right in your country?
 2. Якщо ми говоримо про сторони світу, маючи на увазі географічні або
культурні регіони:
• Have you ever visited the East?
• The West has better national parks.
 The same…
Ми вживаємо артикль THE з прикметником same (однаковий, такий же…):
• We live in the same street.
• These books are not different. They are the same.
• My twin sister and I have the same nose.
• Hilary's the same age as me.
 Вживаємо THE з:
 The sky (небо), the moon (місяць), the world (світ), the sun (сонце), the sea
(море), the ground (земля), the Earth (Земля), the country (село):
• The sky is blue and the sun is shining.
• I like swimming in the sea.
• They live in a town but they want to live in the country.
 The police (поліція), the fire brigade (пожежна команда), the army (армія) (of a
city, country etc.):
• My brother is a soldier. He’s in the army.
 The piano (піаніно), the guitar (гітара), trumpet (труба) (musical instruments
(музичні інструменти)):
• Tom is learning to play the piano.
• I can play the guitar.
 The radio АЛЕ television (телебачення) (без the):
• I often listen to the radio.
• I like watching television. But Can you turn off the television (= the TV set)?
 The truth (правда):
 Не вживаємо THE:
 З прийомами їжі: breakfast (сніданок), lunch (обід), dinner (вечеря):
• I never have breakfast.
• What are you going to have for lunch?
• Dinner is ready!
