What is a mole?
- A mole is a quantity used by chemists to
count atoms and
molecules.
- A mole of something is equal to 6.02 x
1023 “somethings.”
- 1 mole= 6.02 x 10 23 atoms
1 mole = 602 200 000 000 000 000 000
000
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students
should be able to:
1. Identify the formula used in solving
problems involving mole concept.
2. Solve for problem involving mole concept.
Mole Calculations I
• How many sodium atoms are in 0.135 mol
Na?
• Step 1: we want atoms of Na
• Step 2: we have 0.135 mol Na
• Step 3: 1 mole Na = 6.02 × 1023 atoms Na

6.02 × 1023 atoms Na

0.135 mol Na × = 8.1 × 1022 atoms Na
1 mol Na

1021 atoms K?
• Step 1: we want moles K
• Step 2: we have 1.25 × 1021 atoms K
• Step 3: 1 mole K = 6.02 × 1023 atoms K

1 mol K
1.25 × 10 atoms K ×

ACTIVITY TIME
Things to remember…….
• Start on time.
• Practice respect for yourself and others.
• Come prepared to do your part.
• Be a good listener.
• Make sure everyone gets a chance to
contribute or speak.
• Accept constructive criticism gracefully.
• Critique ideas, not people.

In solving problems involving mole concept
• How many magnesium atoms are in 3.5 mol Mg?
• Step 1: identify what is asked (we want atoms of Mg)
• Step 2: identify what is the given values (we have 3.5 mol
Mg)
• Step 3: identify the formula to be used based on the given
and what is asked in the problem (1 mole Mg = 6.02 × 1023
atoms Mg)

6.02 × 1023 atoms Mg = 2.1 × 1024 atoms Mg

3.5 mol Mg ×
1 mol Mg
Uses of Mole Concept
1. The mole concept allows us to count atoms and
molecules by weighing macroscopically small amounts
of matter, because atoms and molecules are so small.

2. It establishes a standard for determining the

stoichiometry of reactions.

3. It establishes a universally recognized standard for

mass production.
I. Read and understand each question carefully. Write the
letter of the best answer.

1. In the problem, “How many moles of Iodine are in 1.05 × 1021

atoms I?”, which of the following formula should be used?
A. moles atoms (avogadro’s number)
B. atoms (avogadro’s number) moles
C. moles moles
D. atoms (avogadro’s number) atoms (avogadro’s
number)
2. In the problem, “How many atoms of hydrogen are in 4.7
moles of hydrogen?”, which of the following formula should be
used?
A. moles atoms (avogadro’s number)
