Mathematics Prayer

Dear God,
May we through your blessings, add
purity to the world, subtract evil from our
lives, multiply the good news of your son, and
divide your gifts and share them with others.
Amen.

Lesson 6: Adding and
Subtracting (Dissimilar)
Rational Expressions
Objectives:
Performs operations on rational algebraic
expressions. (M8AL-Ic-d-1)
Solves problems involving rational algebraic
expressions. (M8AL-Id-2)
Adding and Subtracting Dissimilar Rational
Expression
Dissimilar fractions are fractions with different denominator.
In adding or subtracting dissimilar
fractions, find the least common
denominator (LCD) of the fractions.

Then, multiply each fraction by an

expression equal to 1 to produce an
equivalent fraction that uses the LCD.

Once the fractions have the same

denominator, proceed with
adding/subtracting similar fractions.
Lesson Proper
Finding the LCD of Rational Expressions

Steps in Finding the LCD

1) Factor the denominators.
2) Get the factor/s common to all denominators. Use the highest
exponent of the common factor/s.
3) Get the factor/s NOT common to all denominators. Use the highest
exponent of the NOT common denominator/s.
4) Multiply the factors from steps 2 and 3. This the LCD.

Adding/Subtracting Dissimilar Rational Expressions

Steps in Adding/Subtracting Dissimilar Rational Expressions

1) Find the LCD of the rational expressions.
2) Change to similar rational expressions by multiplying each
rational expression by an expression equal to 1 that uses the LCD.
3) Once the rational expressions have the same denominator, proceed with
adding/subtracting similar rational expressions.
