CONSTRUCTION
the project is subjected to extreme environmental conditions: high radiation, winds, dust or snow storms,
heat, and cold, so the building had to adapt and be designed based on the impacts that these factors could
cause in the form.

• The weight of the snow and the impact of the wind on the
structure were considered, which could require over-
structuring in order to prevent deformations. two strategies
were considered, separated by layers.

• The first one was to think of an aerial structure with a lower • The second strategy consisted of burying the main level of
curvature that would better adapt to the wind. the program, locating the court on an underground level, and
taking advantage of the geothermal energy of the place.
Both strategies resulted in a concave shape, generating a continuous space with a high degree of comfort, as
it has a clearly differentiated cool underground level from the roof.
Afterwards, the curvature of the roof was reduced, making it more aerodynamic and achieving a larger
thermal comfort zone in the lower level, requiring even further burying of the usable space.

David S Ingalls Rink or
The Yale Whale
Eero Saarinen-
Building Typology
David S Ingalls Rink or more famously known
as The Yale Whale is a hockey rink provided by
Yale University in America. The elliptical-
shaped building has a dramatic sweeping roof
of 76 meters. The arena with a capacity of 3500
people has a ceiling height of 75 feet.
Building Mass Configuration

Overall, the building is shaped like the back of a whale ( which is why it is called Whale), so
the linear structure of the building is a representation of whale bones.
STRUCTURAL PATTERNS
Structure
System Linear
The Yale Whale utilizes a
cable structure on its roof. The
construction of this building was
initially by building a core at the center
of the building made of concrete arch.
Then from the concrete arch, long walls
are made on two sides parallel to the
center. Cables are strung from the
center to the wall.
Plate
Structure System

Plate structures are used on the stands

that surround the interior of the
building. In addition, the long curved
walls on both sides use a bearing wall
structure where the wall also functions
as a structure.
Construction
consists of a reinforced concrete
arch with a span of 91 meters as the
main structure of the building and a
cable structure that hangs on the
main structure to support the
roofing material. The main
structure uses an arch structure that
allows for no supporting beams or
columns to be used in the interior.
The arch height of the main
structure facing the ice arena is 23
meters.

The roof structure is grounded at
three points of the center (two points
at the northwest end on the bridge;
and one single point to the south east
end). This structural arrangement
ensured 7,500 temporary spectator
seats could be installed along either
side of the pools in Olympic mode
(total 15,000 temporary seats) with
no structural obstructions.
