Meaning of Reading skills

 Reading Skills are those skills and abilities that are


required to go through a written text and understand
it’s meaning. A reader should be able to go through the
written material with discrimination .
 Reading involves not only physical eyes but mental
eyes as well.
Features of Reading skills
 Reading is marked by the following
outstanding characteristics :-
 1. Purposive activity :- Reading is a
purposive activity, Every reader reads a
text with a purpose in his mind. For
example ,the purpose of a student
reading a book is to pass the exam
 2. Varying pace of Reading :- Reading
is done at diffeent speeds it’s depend
upon the purpose .
 3. Loud Reading and Silent Reading :- Reading is done aloud as
well as silent in the mind, this again depends upon the occasion,
for example A religious leader reads a holy book loudly so the
audience can listen properly.
 4.Complex activity :-Reading is a complex activity when a reader
reads his various faculties get involved and work at the same
time.
 5. Three sign principle :- the three signs are:-sign, signifier and
sifnified.

Reading strategies
 Introduction :- Reading is a complex activity
of decoding and comprehending the written
message. Depending upon the purpose of
reading, the reader will require different
reading strategies and skills in order to
understand the subject content and
language patterns of a message.
 These skills involve vocabulary skills, visual
perception skills, rapid reading skills and
intensive reading skills
 We need to learn and polish These skills in
order to become efficient and active reader.
Vocabulary skills

 1. Word meaning recognition


 2.Guessing the meaning from word structure and context.
 3. Analysis of word structure
 4. Analysis of context clues
Visual perceptual skills
1. Develop faster eye fixations
2. Read in word groups / thought units
instead of Word by word
3. Improve accurate visual perception of
words and phrases
Scanning skills

 Scanning refer to the ability to locate specific information or facts as quickly


as possible.
Scanning includes :-
1. What you want to find
2.Do not read everything
3.Use Guides and aids
4.Identify the central ideas
5.Recognising Main Ideas
Skimming Skills
Skimming refers to the process of reading a text of
passage in order to get a rough idea of what a text is
all about.
It is a rapid reading technique that prepares a
reader for detailed reading
Skimming should answer following questions :-
 What is central idea or theme?
 What is the logic organisation?
 What does the author intend to do?
 What are the main points of the text?
Reading purposes
 No Reading is done without
purpose ,whenever a person reads
something, he does it with a definite
purpose in his mind there are three
outstanding purposes of reading :-
1. Development Reading :- Development
reading means reading for self development.
A reader should does development reading is
an active reader who has a good knowledge
of the things around him and he wants to
acquire more information.
2. Functional Reading
Functional reading means reading with a
specific purpose , such a reader is
comparatively slower than one who does
development reading.
 Recreational Reading :-
Recreational reading is different
from development reading or
functional reading. Here the
purpose is pure pleasure The aim is
diversion of mind that is troubled
by day to day routine activities.
Reading Outcome

Reading outcome means the result obtained after reading a written text. Reading
outcome depends upon a a number if factors, some of the factors are following :-
1. Good vocabulary
2. Knowledge of Grammar
3. Reading Environment
4. Concentration
5. Tension free mood
6. Aptitude for reading
