ASSIGNMENT 3

1. A double jet Pelton wheel is required to generate 7500kW when the available head at
the base of the nozzle is 400m. The jet is deflected through 165° and relative velocity of
the jet is reduced by 15% in passing over the buckets. Determine i) diameter of jet,
ii) Total flow, iii) Force exerted by jets in tangential direction. Assume generator
efficiency 95%, overall efficiency 80% and speed ratio 0.47.
2. An inward flow radial turbine has an overall efficiency of 74%. The net head across the
turbine is 5.5m and required power output is 125kW. The blade speed (runner
tangential velocity) is 0.97(2gH)½ while the flow velocity is 0.4(2gH)½. If the speed of
the runner is 230RPM with hydraulic losses accounting for 18% of the energy available,
calculate the inlet guide vane angle, runner diameter at inlet and width of runner at
inlet. Assume discharge is radial.
3. Design an inward flow Francis turbine whose power output is 330kW under a head of
70m running at 750RPM. Hydraulic efficiency is 94%, overall efficiency is 85%. The flow
ratio at the inlet is 0.15. The breadth ratio is 0.1. The outer diameter of the runner is
twice that of the inner. The thickness of the vanes occupies 6% of the circumferential
area of the runner. Flow velocity is constant and discharge is radial at the outlet.
4. A Kaplan turbine working under a head of 20m develops 11800kW. The outer diameter
of the runner is 3.5m and hub diameter is 1.75cm. The guide blade angle at the extreme
edge of the runner is 35°. The hydraulic and overall efficiencies of the turbine are 88%
and 84% respectively. The whirl velocity at the exit is zero. Determine i) Runner inlet
and outlet vane angles, ii) Speed of the turbine.
5. A Kaplan turbine runner is to be designed to develop 9100kW. The net available head is
5.6m. If the speed ratio is 2.09, flow ratio 0.68, overall efficiency 86% and the diameter
of the boss(hub) is ⅓rd the diameter of the runner. Find the diameter of the runner, its
speed and specific speed of the turbine.
