ln blodlverslLy ln urban areas (Mcklnney, 2008). Splders are known Lo provlde many
ecosysLem servlces, lncludlng conLrolllng populaLlons of annoylng, or dlsease-carrylng pesL
lnsecLs (Sanders eL al., 2008, Marc eL al., 1999), and provldlng food for blrds and oLher large
predaLors (Lowe and Pochull, 2014). Splders are also wldely feared and/or found
dlsgusLlng" by many people and Lhls ls ln parL due Lo a lack of educaLlon and famlllarlLy
wlLh splders, especlally among chlldren (8lxler eL al., 1994, rokop and 1unnlcllffe, 2008).
lf splders ln urban areas are growlng blgger, as found by Lowe eL al. (2014), lL seems llkely
LhaL Lhey wlll become of more concern Lo humans. Pousehold pesLlcldes are ofLen used
agalnsL splders, wlLh cerLaln brands markeLlng splder-speclflc producLs. AL Lhe same Llme,
general pesLlcldes can also have unlnLended effecLs of kllllng splders and oLher harmless or
beneflclal lnsecLs (vlcLorlan ueparLmenL of PealLh, 2012). esLlcldes have also been shown
Lo be harmful Lo human healLh, parLlcularly Lhe healLh of chlldren (uavls eL al., 1992, uavls
eL al., 1993, Lskenazl eL al., 1999).
We selecLed our LargeL group based on flndlngs by !urln eL al. (2010) who noLed LhaL Lhose
of average or above-average lncome and educaLlon Lend Lo be 'lnnovaLors' wlLhln Lhelr
communlLles regardlng envlronmenLal lssues and are more lnLeresLed ln 'envlronmenLally
responslble behavlours'. AlLhough much research was done abouL educaLlng chlldren, we
declded Lo LargeL parenLs of chlldren as Lhey are Lhe ones who are llkely Lo conLrol pesLlclde
use around Lhe house, and also are able Lo educaLe Lhelr chlldren abouL splders. 1hus, we
speclfled our LargeL group as: parenLs of school-aged chlldren, llvlng ln urban areas of
AusLralla, of above-average lncome and educaLlon.

approprlaLe, as lL could relay a large amounL of lnformaLlon, and be easlly dlsLrlbuLed. We

our envlronmenLally-consclous LargeL audlence are llkely Lo vlslL: farmer's markeLs, organlc
