MARINE KUKHALSHVILI
The word mogeriseba is attested in the literary Georgian and dialects. The
Explanatory Dictionary of the Georgian Language defines mogeriseba as ‘allowing the
calf to suck the cow for a short period before beginning to milk’. The same meaning of
the word is used in Kartlian and Gurian dialects. Somewhat modified forms of the word
with the aforesaid meaning occurs in other dialects as dagereba Kahkian, mogireba
Pankisi, gereba Javakhian, genva/gamogenva Imeretian, moganua Megrelian etc.
In the specialists’ literature Megrelian geni/jeni, Chan geni/jeni/njeni Svan ghun
“calf” are related stems. Imeretian genva is considered a Zanism (Arn. Chikobava).
Some authors also speak about the relation and sameness of the Zan gen-/gin- and
the Georgian ger- roots (A. Chincharauli).
The forms as na-ger-ali, na-ngere are interesting to this respect, as they denote ‘a plant
that grows wild, without prior sowing by the man’.
