Abstract
A renovation of a dustbin is done as most of the people in Malaysia ignored the facilities that have been
provided. Because of the ignorance, the garbage problems in Malaysia have become serious. The idea of doing
this project is to solve the problem. The dusbin designed model will be able to raise the awareness among the
community on the importance of bins and reduce pollution that occurred. By using the electrical components
such as door bell, this project will provide variation to the consumers. Material such as mud ball and bokashi
were able to prevent odour pollution and neutralize the water.

Introduction

The smart dustbin is a dustbin that has been renovated which helps people in keeping their surrounding
clean. It functions to minimize human interference in collection and disposal of trash. The dustbin is fitted with
a number of features that enables it to perform its various functions.
Whether it is at work or at home, the smart dustbin will act as an environment friendly trash fighting
side-kick. You do your work, it will do the rest.

1.1

Problem Statement

There were a lot of dustbins that have been provided by the ministry but most of the people in this
country still do not know how to use the dustbin wisely. They do not have any awareness of the importance of
the facility. When the dustbin is full, the trash in the dustbin will cause odour pollution. The pollution will
disturb the area nearby.

1.2

Objective

The smart dustbin was created with electronic system in it. One of the electronic equipment that is door
bell is set up to attract people to use the smart bin. It will also help to introduce a system that is more hygienic
which is based on system of cleanliness and environmentally friendly plus, to reduce odour pollution by filtering
the leachate water from the trash.

Project Scope

The scope of this project is to produce a trash bin that uses electronic system as improving existing
systems. This project will focus on the scope of the following:
1. Use existing bins with little external and internal modifications to entice consumers.
2. The ability to get rid of waste water from stagnant waste in the trash.
3. Able to eliminate odour and turbidity generated by the rest of the garbage.
4. How to attract people attention to use the dustbin with the addition of sound effects.
5. Using materials that is available in the market

Literature Review

The renovation of the dustbin is based on previous project that is Smart Trash System. This is to ensure
that the dustbin that had been design will give benefits to the consumers.

Smart Trash System embodies an electronic device known as Smart Trash Bin, which consists of
Sensors and a Radio Frequency (RF) transmitter. The sensors sense the waste status being collected by the
Smart Trash Bin [2]. Two types of sensors are used in the Smart Trash Bin. The first one is a Load sensor which
is used to sense the load of the waste in the smart trash bin and the second one is an IR proximity sensor whose
function is to detect the level of the waste in the smart trash bin. There are two IR sensors, one placed at the
middle of the Smart Trash Bin and the second is placed near the top of the Smart Trash Bin. The use of two IR
proximity sensors makes the decisions more reliable and exact. The RF signal is transmitted only when all the
sensors are in a high state. Whenever the Smart Trash Bin is filled up to the specified load and level, the sensors
get activated and it generates a signal that is transmitted by the RF transmitter fitted in the Smart Trash Bin. The
signal transmitted by the RF transmitter is received by the RF receiver which is present at the local base station.
After receiving the signal, the local base station decodes the trash bin location and accordingly sends a signal to
the smart monitoring and controlling hut which sends signal to Smart vehicular system about the location of the
trash bin. The monitoring and controlling hut in addition to the site of bin also sends the dumping site to the
smart vehicular system [2].

Materials and Methods

These are the list of materials used for this project. Mudballs were used as a material to make the
leachate water from the trash clean. Wire mesh was used as a filter. Plastic dustbin was the main component for
this project. Door bell, power supply and loud speaker were the electronic components that have been used in
this project.

Setting up the electronic components
Electronic components were setting inside the lid of the dustbin.

2.

Welding of filter
The welding work of wire mesh has been done to produce a filter. The filter was designed according to
the shape of the dustbin. The filter then wrapped with green gauze.
3.

The effectiveness test

This test was done to the mudballs to ensure that the mudballs could make the waste water from the
trash clean and could help to reduce the odour problem. The mudballs then were put inside the filter.

Results and Discussion

Before the mudballs, the previous materials that have been used to make the leachate water from the
trash clean were the mixture of charcoal and alum. But, the materials were failed to make the water clean. After
that, mudballs were chosen as the materials to make the leachate water of the trash clean. An effectiveness test is
done and it gave unexpected result. The leachate water from the trash became clean.

Leachate water from dustbins are collected and poured inside a bottle. All the materials such as
Bokashi and mudballs are prepared. The condition of leachate water before mudball was put inside the water
was dirty. After a week, the leachate water with the mudball inside became clean. The mudball also reduced the
odour problem of the lechate water.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this smart dustbin showed the people that a common type of dustbin could be
transformed into something new. This renovation of dustbin could save the budget and the music element that
used in the dustbin could attract people attention and this would help the people to raise their awareness of the
importance of dustbin.
Besides that, this smart dustbin could help to keep the environment clean and could help to reduce the
odour pollution.
