Weinland Park Community Civic Association
Safety Committee
Summary of Meeting of February 18, 2016
Georgina Stevenson, co-chair of the Safety Committee, called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. in
the citys Northside Neighborhood Pride Center.
Ms. Stevenson reported Ahmed Ebady is concerned with a potential problem near the northwest
corner of East Eighth Avenue and Peters Alley (between Indianola and Summit). Two vans
frequently are parked there with their lights on. Ms. Stevenson said she observed drugs being
sold from the vans.
Ms. Stevenson proposed the streetlights in Peters Alley and Francis Alley be changed from
yellow to white to brighten the area. Lt. Smith Weir said the city is considering the possibility of
installing smart streetlights whose brightness can be adjustable.
Steve Sterrett suggested the committee should be clearer about its work and not fall into a habit
of just meeting to meet. Ms. Stevenson and Mr. Sterrett agreed to talk with the civic
associations Steering Committee about what concerns residents may have about public safety.
Aaron R. Fraker, University District site supervisor for the Community Crime Patrol, said CCP
currently doesnt have patrol units in Weinland Park due to staffing issues, but CCP plans to have
patrol units return by spring. The patrollers would work in Weinland Park from 2 to 6 p.m.
The business of the committee being concluded, Ms. Stevenson adjourned the meeting at 6:25
p.m.
Summary prepared by Steve Sterrett.
