Advance human rights and social

and economic justice.
Behavior 3.9 This competency illustrates the understanding of forms and
mechanisms behind oppression and discrimination. It includes advocating for
human rights and social/ economic justice.

Behavior 3.10 It encourages to engage in practices that advance social and

economic justice.

How have I used this competency?

This week, I have observed individuals who have been hurt by discrimination and
oppression. I have heard how they feel inferior, and violated. I response, I have
watched how the different social workers have advocated for them, and instilled a
hope in them that was not there before (P.B. 3.9). They showed empathy for the
individuals, however promoted and empowered the individuals to make a change. It
was exciting to watch the social workers cooperate with the clients professionally by
hearing their feelings, but encouraging something positive from it.
I have also worked in a environment that was fairly different from my own, while
this was hard, it is very important as social workers to not let this difference show in
our facial expressions and our emotions. It is crucial to keep your composure and
understand that we are all different.
Lastly, this week I was able to go to court and hear the social workers testify their
cases before the judge (P.B. 3.10). I saw some parents loose custody of their
children, and some were reunified. I had not ever been to court before so this was
very interesting to me.
