Noong ika-walo ng Nobyembre, taong dalawang libot labintatlo, nagsimulang
Kilala si Batman hindi bilang isang superhero kundi isang Admin ng The PUP
Confessions. Ang admin ang siyang nangangasiwa sa page na kanyang ginawa.
Nakuha ang kanyang alyas na Batman mula sa katagang madalas banggitin ng
mga estudyante na Bahala na si Batman. Si Batman ang may kapangyarihan na
magpost at masabihan ng mga sikreto ng ibang PUPians.

gawin o panindigan. Kung tutuusin madalas tayong magkuwento sa ating mga
kaibigan, sapagkat naniniwala tayong di nila tayo huhusgahan at di nila ipagkakalat
ang ating mga karanasan. Subukan mong isipin na may isang estranghero ang
tumabi sayo sa loob ng dyip o bus, at nagsimula siyang magkuwento sayo ng mga
sikreto tungkol sa kanyang pamilya, sarili at malalaswang hangarin niya sa buhay.
Maaaring lumipat ka ng upuan, bumaba ng dyip, o pumikit na parang bata at

Other conversations have taken place with the aid of the wall. People write
from left to right and from top to the bottom. Some words have been there for so
long that they have faded or smudged. In these public spaces, individuals pour out
the emotions and thoughts they would not necessarily share with their families or
friends. Hiding your identity, it turns out, can help you embrace your identity.
"People don't feel the social pressure they would feel if they're identified," said
Nicholas Merola, a Northwestern postdoctoral student who studies cognitive and
social interaction in technological interactions. You can identify yourself in a way
you don't have to hide.
Anonymity doesnt only take the form of graffiti. Northwestern Confessions is
a Facebook page where students can submit their "confessions" anonymously. The
anonymous confessions in this public online space are much more negative,
frequently loaded with four-letter words.
And thats ok, according to Gary Fine, a Northwestern professor of sociology
who specializes in social psychology and cultural sociology. "Some people enjoy
the hostility. It's a basis of comedy," he said. He added that for a lot of people,
throwing heavy words into anonymous messages would make the confessions
bolder and funnier, and attract more views.
Anonymity not only allows individuals to vent about problems they perceive in

That is, "Facebook confession boards" are borne out of a need for an online
conversation in which dialogue for the most part is not connected to one's online
presentation, which is often purposefully maintained and yet not fully removed from
one's offline identity. Merola and his fellow researchers found that in addition to the
benefits anonymity provides, confession boards also allow individuals to reach out
to those not in their immediate circles. Merola noticed beneath the Facebook post,
"is it weird to still be a virgin", individuals responded via self-identified comments
that they too have felt uncomfortable at times being virgins at their age, and some
encouraged the anonymous person to go to CAPS or CARE for more substantial
help if she or he needed it. Merola cited Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman, who
saw life as a stage and individuals as actors who performed expected roles like
losing ones virginity every day. "But when we're anonymous, we don't have be on
stage," Merola said.
On one side, there have been numerous studies done proving that with
anonymity, human nature tends to be cruel and self-centered. One such study
placed female college students in a space in which their identities were shielded
and they were allowed to administer [fake] electrical surges to patients coming in.
The study showed that over time, the electrical surges grew in duration especially
towards patients who the female college students didnt like. Just like these female
college students became more cruel in their shrouded identity, so do many online
gamers. Under the assumption that there can be no consequence, many gamers
choose to be much more cruel with their online personas then they would ever be
face to face with others.
But, on the other, new studies have been released to say that anonymity
doesnt necessarily mean negative results will ensue. In one recent study, the effect
of the online environment was taken into account. More specifically, they looked at
how a player reacts towards codes of conduct inherent in one virtual environment
over another. They found that, in virtual spaces where strong, external messages
on how to behave were present, players found it in themselves to abide by those
environmental cues. Even though they were shielded from identification, they were
still compliant and willing to respect the virtual environment they were in.

Self Constellations Across Media
The self interacts with the environment in which it is expressed. It is not
independent of that environment. If a man suppresses his aggression in life but
expresses it online, both behaviors reflect important aspects of his personality that
surface under different conditions. If a woman is shy in-person but outgoing online,
neither self-presentation is more true than the other. Both are dimensions of who
she is, each revealed within a different situational context.
These ideas about self constellations extend as far back as William James'
theory of consciousness shifting from one focus to another within a field of
associations. They also are consistent with contemporary theories about
dissociation and the information processing of experience.Therefore, we can think
of the disinhibition effect as a person shifting to an "online" personality constellation
that may be dissociated - in varying degrees, depending on the person - from the
in-person constellation. Inhibiting guilt, shame, or anxiety may be features of the inperson self but not that online self. This constellations model also helps explain
other online phenomena, like identity experimentation, role-playing fantasy games,
multitasking projects, and other subtle shifts in personality expression as we move
from one online environment to another. In fact, a single disinhibited "online self"
probably does not exist at all, but rather a collection of slightly different
constellations of emotion, memory, and thinking that surface in and interact with
different types of online environments. Different communication modalities enable
different expressions of oneself. They allow us to see the different perspectives of
that complex thing we call "identity."
The online use of real names is already relatively rare outside the social
networks, but most sites allow and surreptitiously even encourage the revealing of
nationality, gender and the use of an avatar, aside from a username. Online
anonymity is not a common occurrence, and it is almost never encouraged. Indeed,
influential companies in the industry, such as Facebook, argue that pseudonyms
and multiple identities show a lack of integrity (Kirkpatrick, 2010). The newest and
fastest growing social network, Google Plus, considered by many to be a rival of
Facebook, currently has a real names policy, and users who are found to have
signed up using pseudonyms have their account suspended. Google, however,
claim this arrangement is temporary, and that it is only used now in order to create
a certain atmosphere in the social network. Interestingly enough, they released that
statement the day after a speech by Christopher Poole at the 2011 Web 2.0
summit, where the founder of 4chan.org lamented Facebooks, Googles and to a
certain extent Twitters attitudes to anonymity.

From Gaza to dating, why users are confessing their thoughts on anonymous
apps like Secret
Secrets are not supposed to be told, let alone shared publicly. Still, some
people are posting their confessions on the app Secret, created by a Silicon Valley
start-up that last week collected $25 million in funding that sums up to a total of
$35 million so far. Now that Europe is dealing with the right to be forgotten,' users
seem to be growing more sensitive to the pitfalls of having their personal history
permanently posted online. By contrast, the anonymity promised by apps like
Secret--and other apps targeting this market like Confide, Whisper and Yik Yak -can feel like a relief.
Here's how Secret works: The app lets users share comments with people
located nearby and with friends and friends of friends (through an algorithm that
tracks phone and Facebook contacts), without revealing the identity of either the
person sending the message or the person receiving it.
When the app was first launched in February, critics argued that it would be
used for purposes like bullying, sexting or other kinds of inappropriate or hurtful
comments. But the creators say that people are instead commenting on a
surprising range of issues, including current affairs like Gaza last week, politics,
dating, work--even existential confessions and reflections.
Topics tend to ebb and flow, similar to Twitter, said David Byttow, cofounder of Secret. Either theres a new trend popping up, or theres a common

In her opinion, the app can actually offer people some potential healing:
Being able to externalize our feelings of shame, regret, pain and guilt can be
psychologically helpful...We are social creatures with an unending interest in other
people. Seeing private thoughts and feelings is compelling given our need for
social connection and community.
Secret app creators havent revealed figures on their user base, but they said
it keeps growing. One of the founders, David Byttow, said the company is scaling
and expanding internationally; Secret is already becoming popular in Russia, the
Netherlands and China, where the start-up recently formed a joint venture with a
local company.

When one is anonymous, two things happen at the same time, said Abraham
Rutchick, professor of psychology at CSUN. One is the loss of who you are
normally, or your standard everyday self. And the second piece is the adoption of a
different identity, if you want, Rutchick said. Many posts on the page are not
actual confessions, but advice and statements of fact, most of which are racist and
sexist in nature and are often negative. Others pertain to relationship woes, sexual
encounters, thoughts, desires and people disliked in specific course sections.

revealed to Batman through the accounts they use. Some may say it's unfair
compared to other confession pages that provide sites where people can send their
confessions without being known. But for Batman, using Google documents will
take more process. He said that all we need to have is mutual respect and trust
professors, and Batman's quotes. Lavarez also said that Batman enjoys everything
he does for the reason that he gets the chance to accommodate youth as more
stories unfold in front of him. Also, how stated that Batman is powerful. Everyone
has his own purpose of doing things. There will always be deeper reasons behind
every action. To add feature to confessions, there is the More Fun in PUP photos
that shows caught-in-the-act moments in the university. There are also segments
for quotations such as the #umiintelektuwaltayo coming from PUP may be thinking
that Batman's purpose is just for personal benefits. One thing's for sure. With what
