SUMMARY
Genetic information and biotechnology are expected, within next years,
to offer important opportunities for the improvement of human health, since
genetic checkup shall give the ability of diagnosis, prolepsis and therapy of
diseases, not only for the person who is having the genetic checkup, but for
his descendants as well. For the most efficient use of the genetic results,
which arise from the decryption of human DNA, DNA databases are
established and intend to gather, consolidate and process these results.
Some of the issues that touch human decency are genetic therapy, eugenics,
experiments in conceptions and access to genetic data. Law must confront
these matters within next decades. Our country has signed European
Councils Treaty for human rights and biomedicine and has cofirmed it by the
law 2619/1998, in order to adjust great achievments of biology and medicine.
Law 2479/1997, concerning the protection of personal data, is also very
important, because adjusts genetic data, too. Though, the completency of
greek law in the matter of genetic data depends on the boom and continual
progress of biomedicine.
