KEYS TO THE WEEK
Friday
Lesson 27 Spelling Test
Next Week
Aspire Tests: Monday through Thursday
TESTS BEING RETURNED
Pronoun Test
We will be having our first real experience with the Aspire standardized test next week. The tests take
much less time than the Terra Novas of the past, so there is no need for a snack break, and most classes
in the second half of the morning and in the afternoon will be held as normal. Because we are going to
start early in the day, it is important that the children are in school on time, and we ask that any
appointments that need to be scheduled next week are not scheduled in first few hours of the morning.
Please help the children do as well as they can by making sure they get a good nights sleep before the
tests and have a breakfast that will get the day off to a good start. And each child should have a couple
number 2 pencils with them some things never change .
In Language Arts classes this week, the students will begin a verb/adverb unit. Also, they will test the
validity of generalizations using text support while reading the story, "Ghost Towns of the American
West". Mrs. Smith will introduce the outline format, in preparation for the research report that the
students will write. More information will follow soon.
The children are working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers in Math.
In Science we are starting an Astronomy unit. The unit really has two parts. In the first, we will be
looking at the Solar System. There will be a test on that part of the unit a week from Friday. The
children will receive the study guide tomorrow. After that we will begin the second part: an inquiry unit
entitled Lost in Space. The unit was developed by a team of Archdiocesan teachers and will be used,
with some modifications, in the 5th grade Science curriculum throughout the Archdiocesan school
system. The object of the unit is to learn about the history of the Universe, the objects that make up the
Universe, and the tools that help us study the Universe. As a final project, teams of students will create
Museum Exhibits to share the information they have learned.
And finally, I have a favor to ask. If you are sending treats for a birthday or other occasion, and the
treats contain nuts or may contain nuts, could you please give me a heads-up so I can be on top of the
situation? A quick email or a short note coming in with the treats would do.
