The Pudtan Wang Na Throne

Pudtan Throne is a type of royal seats exclusively used by kings. Normally, it is
used as a royal throne and in royal ceremonies. It is sometimes equipped with a
carrier to serve as a royal vehicle for use in the royal barge procession.

There are three Pudtan thrones. The first one was built during the reign of King
Rama I, made of wood with gold lacquer and decorated with jewelry. It is currently
placed on a royal throne under a royal umbrella in the Amarin Winitchai Hall. It is
called Phra Thinang Pudtan Kannachanasinghat or Phra Thinang Pudtan Wang
Luang. It is reserved for royal palace.

The second Pudtan throne was made during the reign of King Rama V, made of
wood and gold lacqured. It is called Phra Thinang Pudtan Thom. It is used as a royal
throne for the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall.

The third Pudtan throne was built for use by princes of Wang Na. It is made

of wood, decorated with gold lacquer and mirror. It is called Phra Thinang Pudtan
Wang Na. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Mongkut

(Rama IV) in honor of King Pinklao.

The Phra Thinang Pudtan Wang Na is similar in shape to Phra Thinang Pudtan
Wang Luang. It is a seat without upper part, with a two-tiered base. The lower part
of the base is decorated with 14 figures of garuda and the upper part of the base is
adorned with 16 figures of mythical angels known as Theppanom. Above the base,
there are two hand rests and one back rest, made of ivory carved and shaped into
door columns, with the top part shaped into a form of western-style leaf. On its sides,
there are large spiral-shaped wooden pads. The back rest is decorated with golden
turtle-shaped mirrors. In general, the throne is meticulously adorned. It is now kept
and put on show at Pimukmontien Hall in the National Museum, Bangkok. It is used
each year at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall during the royal ceremony on the
Constitution Day.
