Objective 29

Describe the diagnostic techniques used by psychologists.

There are no specific lab tests that a doctor can do to show that someone has a
metal disorder. There are many steps that a doctor must take first. First, there is
an evaluation that includes background information and personality tests. The
doctor will ask questions about their symptoms and medical history, and
sometimes perform a psychical exam. The doctor bases their diagnosis on the
persons report of symptoms which, include social and functional problems. The
doctor then determines if the symptoms point to a diagnosis. The doctors then
use DSM so that medical professionals are able to diagnose patients.
