Objective 34

Summarize the Gestalt principles of perception.

There are many different principles of perception. They are laws of

similarity, pragnanz, proximity, continuity, and closure.
Law of Similarity: Items that are similar tend to be grouped together.
Ex. Putting the colors of red and blue in separate columns.
Pragnanz: Reality is organized or reduced to the simplest form possible.
Ex. Seeing the Olympic Circles as circles rather than as many different
more complicated shapes.
Proximity: Objects near each other tend to be grouped together.
Ex. Circles on left side appear in groups in vertical columns, while others
on the right are grouped in horizontal rows.
Continuity: Lines are seen in smooth paths.
Ex. On a curve the top branch is seen as continuing the first segment of
the line. This allows us to see things as flowing smoothly without breaking lines
up into multiple parts.
Closure: Objects grouped together are seen as a whole
Ex. We tend to ignore gaps and complete contour lines. Even if there are
triangles or circles, our minds fill in the missing pieces or information to create
familiar shapes and images.
