Have each learner think of an introductory discussion activity they could create, and have
their students complete during the first week of class, to foster communication and enable
students to get to know one another. Write down the discussion activities they come up with
on the dry-erase board.

Ask learners if they have ever created a discussion forum and a discussion topic for their
online course(s). Among those learners who have, ask them to share what type of discussion
forums and topic they have created using the Discussions tool.
Time allocated: 10 min
Show learners the Discussions Area of one of their colleagues online course that has
several discussion forums, all in which contain discussion topics that promote communication
and collaboration among students in the course.

Time allocated: 5 min

Guided Practice

Provide each learner with the links to the Discussions Tool Instructional Manual

the Discussions Tools Instructional Video

Learners will choose one of the instructional resources to review on their own to understand
and learn how to create a discussion forum and a discussion topic.

Time allocated: 10 min

From the knowledge and understanding gathered from either reading the Discussions Tool
Instructional Manual or listening and watching the Discussions Tool Instructional Video,
learners will be asked to create a discussion forum, in their online course, entitled Course
Introductions that contains an introductory discussion topic activity entitled Introduce
Yourself to the Class.

Time allocated: 15 min


Learner Assessment

View each learners online course to verify that they were able to create the discussion forum
and the discussion topic specified in the Independent practice/Group Practice.
If more than 50% of the learners were unable to create the discussion forum and the
discussion topic specified in the Independent/Group Practice component.

Reteach
Time allocated: 10 min

Enrichment Extension

Learners who were successfully able to create the discussion forum and discussion topic
specified in the Independent/Group Practice component can remain after training to add
additional discussion forums and topics to their online course.

Reiterate to learners what the D2L Discussions Tool is for and that if they need further
assistance working with it to refer to the Discussions Tool Instructional manual or the
Discussions Tool Instructional video.

Have each learner fill-out the training survey located on the workshop schedule.
