II B.Tech II Semester (RR) Supplementary April/May 2012 Examinations THERMAL ENGINEERING-I (Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks 1. (a) (b) (a) (b) ***** Compare the actual cycles and fuel-air cycles of SI engine. Mention various simplified assumptions used in fuel-air cycle analysis. How to create turbulence in CI engine combustion chamber in order to get better mixing of air and fuel. What are the different additives to be added in CI engine? Explain the use of additives. Explain Williams line method of determination of frictional power and explain why this method is not used for petrol engines? A 4-stroke diesel engine consumes 4.2 kg of fuel per hour when running at 650 rpm. The engine dimensions are 100 mm bore and 155 mm stroke. If the spring height is 4.5 mm with spring index of 1.1 bar/mm. Calculate IP, BP, mechanical efficiency and brake thermal efficiency of CV of fuel is 4400 kj/kg. Explain the effect of intercooling in a multi stage reciprocating compressor. A rotary compressor receives air at 1 bar and 17 and delivers it at a pressure of 6 bars. Determine per kg of air delivered work done by the compressor and heat exchanged with the water jacket when the compression is isothermal, isentropic by the relation PV1.6 =constant. Differentiate between centrifugal compressor and axial flow compressor. Enumerate the application of compressed air. State how reciprocating air compressors are classified. State the most important properties of a good refrigerant. Discuss briefly the different types of heat loads which have to be taken into account in order to estimate the total heat load of a large restaurant for summer airconditioning. Discuss the relative merits and demerits of vapour absorption and vapour compression refrigeration systems. Draw the typical layout of air conditioning unit and explain. Write short notes on (a) Delay period in diesel engines. (b) Fuel ignition in SI engines. (c) Combustion in CI engines. ***** Max Marks: 80
