ect is a book made up of several re Rental Lists that were

sent to us Mr. A. I. B. Stewart, C.B.E B.L. F.S C. (Scot) of

lltown, Kintyre, 1, Scotland. These lists were transcribed

Hr. St.ewa r t; and Hr. And r ew NclZerral who a u t ho r ed the book Kin

in t h e Seventeenth Century> The lists pertain to lands held from the

Crown the Earl and later the Dnke of 11. The persons listed are

tacksmen wno rented [rom the These tacksmen further divided

and rented to tenants. The lists cover from 1505 to 1710.

The lists have been

of 1s1ay people. We owe

and indexed by Dr. Ruby C. Campbell of Earlier Ruby had retyped and indexed the 1ists her another b vote of thanks.

surnames in t h e s e lists are th e same as you w iLl find in the early and later Scot settlers of North Carolina's Cape Fear region. This

is true especially as regards McNeill, McKay, McAllister, McMillan, 11,

Stewart, Reid, etc. Then after 1650 (after the plunder and destruction

the Harquis of Montrose and Alastair HacColla-McDonald followed by the pL1~',UC) wb en the Earl of Kintyre b r ough t in Lowlanders we f Ln d the surnames Hoore, Hamilton, Cunningham and Montgomery, etc. added.

It is hoped that these lists may be of help to those trying to finel the place of orgin of their Argyll ancestors.

Nr. Stewart- has been very active in the Kintyre Antiquarian Soc en:

many years - as was Mr. McKerrall before his death. Nr. Stewart is a retired attorney. He frequently serves as sheriff. He says that his duty does not call [or boots and six-guns, but for black robes and a wig! As a sheriff,

he holds court. t1r. Stewart is another p er s on to whom we owe a gre;) t big

t.h ank you.

In 1499 Colin Mcauchan (McEachran) of Killelan, an olel McDonald vassal Has

NOTE

The lists given above are intended ma:irily to exhibit the

and p e r sorra I

uame s which occur in the rentals of 1541. The rents are not included but axe v eri

in detail for each hold

in the Exchequer Rolls. They consisted of money and

produce and in some cases services are also specified. The produce rents comprised

meal, malt, cheese, marts, and wedd e r s . In each case the price of th(~ pa'r t Lcul.a.r

is specified which appears to indicate that either a certain standard of

quality was demanded or that the produce rents could be commuted w i t h money.

Services were specified in the case of the following holdings only:

McRannald), Ranadale (Gilbreid McMillan) in North Kintyre, and Cattadull, etc.,

(John Jv1cMurich) in South Kintyre the last being the olel bards lands which with

the harpers (Brouneriken, etc.) are now seen to be paying rent and no

free-

hold. Kilellan is shown as given free to McEachran for his fee as Hair or Cr ownc r ,

and its rent is not specified. The leases were for three years in each case. The

prices quoted were as follows: cheese, 2 shillings per stone; meal, 16 pence rhe

stone; malt,S shillings the boll; marts, 26 shillings and 8 pence each; wedders,
