IMPACT ASSESSMENT ON CHILDLINE SERVICES


The researcher has done a survey to assess the impact of CHILDLINE services.
The researcher interviewed totally 246 members. Out of these 183 were children
and 63 were adults.

I. PROFILE OF RESPONDENTS:

I. 1. Children:
As mentioned in the above given paragraph, 183 children were interviewed across
various categories. Their profile is given below:

1.1.1 Gender of the child respondent:

Out of 183 children 117 are boys and 66 are girls. That means 64% are boys and
36% are girls.

18 boys and 16 girls have represented from the age group of 6-10yrs. 54 boys and
32 girls have represented from the age group of 11-14yrs of age. From the age
group of 15 - 17 years, 33 boys and 16 girls have responded. From 18 years and
above age group 9 boys and one girl have responded. 3 boys and 1 girl have not
mentioned their age in the questionnaire.

Out of boys 46% are from age group of 11-14 years, 28% are from 15-17 years,
15% are from the age group of 6-10 years and 8% are from 18years and above. 3%
of boys haven't specified the age.

Out of girls, 48% are from 11-14 years of age group, from 6-10 age group 24% of
girls and 15-17 year of age group also 24% and from and from 18 years and age
group 1% of girls have been represented. 1% of girls have not specified their age.

All these respondents belonged to different life situations. 21 boys and 11 girl
were child labourers; 12 boys and 2 girls were roaming around as street children;:
boys and 4 girls were orphans; 31 boys and 5 girls left their homes due t<
problems and reached Vijayawada railway station as runway kids; 2 boys and (
girls used to work as the domestic child labourers; 1 boy got lost; 1 boy and 1 gir
were addicted to drugs; 16 boys and 7 girls belonged to families from slums; 21
boys and 30 girls have not specified their past life situation.

1.1.4. Present life situation:


All these respondents have quit their past life and are leading a different life with
the help of different NGOs. The table and graph given below give the details of

Out of total 183 respondents 134 are going to school and 49 are working. That
means 73% are going school and 27% are working.

SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN

Among 134 school going children, 32 boys and 20 girls are going to municipal
schools, 36 boys and 23 girls are attending non-formal schools, 8 boys and 10 girls
are going to other schools and 4 boys and lgirl is attending college.

Among 49 working children, 1 boy is doing rag picking, 14 boys and 7 girls are in
vocational training and 16 boys and 4 girls are doing other works, 6 boys and 1
girl have not mentioned their nature of work.

VI.

1.2. Profile of respondents from the allied systems:

The representatives have been selected as respondents from the following allied
systems: Police, Government Railway Police, Railway Protection Force, Lawyers,
Labour dept., Education dept (lecturers), National Child Labour Project, Women
and Child Welfare Dept., Sarvasikshabhiyan, Govt. Hospital (RMO), Road
Transport Corporation, Rag Pickers Association, Station Master, Auto Rickshaw
Drivers Association, BSNL (PRO), Municipal Corporation and Political Parties.

II. 1. Response of children on various questions related to CHELDLINE,


Vijayawada of Krishna District services.

The researcher posed selected set of questions to the 183 child respondents in
order to know their opinion on CHILDLINE service. Questions and the response
was as given below:

Out of 183 child respondents 58% of the children know about CHILDLINE. Out
of them 36% are boys and 22% girls. 41% of the children said that they are not
aware of CHILDLINE. Out of them 27.86% are boys and 13.66% are girls. 1.9%
of children have not responded to the question.

Out of 183 respondents 21.87 children told that they had made calls to
CHILDLINE. Out of them 13.67% are boys and 8.20% are girls. 48.08% children
havent done calls to CHILDLINE among them 34.97% are boys and 13.11% are
girls. 30.05% children said that that the question is not applicable to them. Among
them 15.3 are boys and 14.75 are girls.

Out of total respondents 38.8% of children claimed that they received help from
CHILDLINE among them 21.86% are boys and 16.94% are girls. 40.45% of
children said that they havent received from CHILDLINE. Out of them 38.26%
are boys and 2.19% are girls. 20.75% of children said that the question is not
applicable for them. Among them 1.63% are boys and 19.12% are girls.

37% of the children responded that CHILDLINE responded immediately when


they called or concerned adult called for them. Out of them 21.5% are boys and
15.5% are girls. One boy (0.54% of total children) said that CHILDLINE did not
respond in time. 62.46% children replied that it is not applicable to them. Among
them 41.25% are boys and 20.21% are girls.

Out of total children 85.25% children declared that they have faith in CHILDLINE
that it will rescue them when they are in distress. Out them 55.19% are girls and
30.06% are girls. One girl (0.54% of total children) said that she does not have
faith in CHILDLINE. 6.56% children said that they have faith on CHILDLINE for
some extent. Out of them 5.47% are boys and 1.09% are girls. 7.65% children did
not respond to this question. Out of them 3.27% are boys and 4.38% are girls.

Out of total children 38.89% children said that they have shared about
CHILDLINE to their friends/peer group/ any other person. Out of them boys are
26.77% and girls are 12.04%. 38.24% of children said that they have not told any
body about CHILDLINE service. Among them 26.77% are boys and 11.47% are
girls. 22.95% children, out of them 10.38% boys and 12.57% girls, did not
respond this question.

This is the question regarding connectivity to 1098 service and willingness of


public booth owners to allow children to make this free call. 35% children said
that PCO booth owners are allowing them to make the calls from PCO booths. Out
of them 19.67% are boys and 15.33% are girls. 20.75% children said that they are
not being allowed by PCO owners to make calls. Among them 17.48% are boys
and 3.27% are girls. 14.75% children said they are being allowed by the owners
for some extent to make calls. Among them 8.74% are boys and 6.01% are girls.
29.5% children did not respond to this question. Among them 18.03% are boys
and 11.47% are girls.

The researcher posed selected set of questions to the 63 representatives from allied
systems in order to know their opinion on CHILDLINE service. Questions and

said that CHILDLINE services are fair enough. None of them said that
