Osmosis in an Egg Over 6 Days

Day Mass (g) Volume Remaining Observations

(mL)

1 67.7 200 Egg sunk, white hard shell

4 106.6 100 Swollen, orange, texture like caramelized sugar

5 70.1 225 Smaller, caramel color, peeling

6 105.6 162 Larger, squishy, fragile, orange

Hypothesis:

If an egg is placed in various liquids, then water will cross the eggs membrane both to enter and
leave the egg to reach dynamic equilibrium.

Conclusions:

1. Based on the change in mass between days 1 and 2, vinegar is a hypotonic solution. This means that
over time the egg will expand and there will be less vinegar in the beaker in an attempt to reach
dynamic equilibrium.

2. The water moved out of the egg as represented by the decrease in mass, obvious change in size of
the egg, and increase in the volume remaining. When the solute (the egg in this case) has more water
than the solution (the syrup) you have a hypertonic solution.

3. There was 25mL more liquid remaining than there was added after removing the egg from the syrup.

4. Based on the increase in mass of the egg and the decrease in volume remaining in the beaker, the
water moved into the egg because the solution was hypotonic.

Depending on the concentration of water in each of the liquids, water did in fact enter or leave the egg as
represented by the data. The change in mass of the egg and volume of the liquid remaining shows how
and in which liquids water entered or left the egg.
