Identifying Traffic and Map Symbols

History-Social Science
Kindergarten

Purpose: Students will acquire knowledge on different traffic, and map symbols. Students will also use basic
technology tools to display their knowledge.

What will this activity accomplish?: Through these series of lessons students will build an awareness and
understanding of the symbols seen in their surrounding areas. Students will also use technology tools in order
to express their understanding of this topic.

Description: Students will be able to identify and express their understanding on certain traffic and map
symbols according to the History-Social Science Common Core Standard - K 4. 3. Identify traffic symbols and
map symbols (e.g., those for land, water, roads, cities).

Activities

Preparation

- Kahoot! pre-assessment
- Watch video “GreenLight - Traffic Signs for Kids, Educational Videos to Learn Road Safety”
- Watch video “The Map Features Song (Gentleman by PSY)”
- Nearpod (PPT)
- Students use camera
- Students and teacher will create a map and map key of classroom and bedroom
- Voicethread

Procedures ISTE Indicators


Day 1: Students will answer questions provided through Kahoot! so the 1c
teacher can determine their prior knowledge on traffic and map
symbols.
Day 2: Students watch the following two videos from Youtube – 1c

Teacher will debrief with the students on the different symbols that were
seen. Teacher presents the Nearpod presentation.
Day 3: Students will use a camera (phone camera, digital camera, iPad 2b, 2c, 3a
camera, etc.) to take 4 pictures of traffic symbols seen in their
community.
Day 4: Students will share their pictures with a group of 4 to 5 students. 7c
Students will discuss the meaning and importance of their symbols with
their group.
Day 5: Students and teacher will draw a map and key map of their
classroom together using specific symbols; for example, a brown square
will signify a desk. Then students will draw a map and a key map of their
bedroom using only symbols.
Day 6: Students will use Voicethread to either discuss the picture of a 3c, 4c, 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d
symbol or the map of their bedroom. For their picture they will answer
the following questions –

1. What is the symbol?


2. What does the symbol mean?
3. Where can the symbol be found?
4. Why is this symbol important to follow?

For the map of their bedroom they will answer the following questions –

1. What did you include in your map?


2. What does each symbol mean?
3. Why did you include what you included?
4. Why is it important to include a map key into a map?
