Pitching is a common part of life in both the arts and in academia. Being able to present a
clear, thorough and enticing snapshot of your proposed work is a valuable skill, and not one
everyone has naturally.
Whether you are applying for funding for a recording or touring project, pitching an article
to a magazine or website, or pitching a client in an advertising agency, some thorough
preparation is always an advantage. You might get hit with a curly question you didn’t
anticipate, but if you’ve done your prep you should be able to answer any relevant
questions your audience has about the what, how and why of your proposal.
Using this document as a template, think through your proposal and write down your
responses to the prompts. Next week we’ll meet in the recital hall and everyone can take a
turn in pitching their project. You can at least expect to be asked questions about any of the
following that isn’t clear from your presentation, so take this week to make sure you’re
ready to go for next week.
