2. Analysis

Which means adjective class has degrees of comparison.

What do you mean by degrees of comparison class?

Degrees of Comparison - refers to adjectives being

written in different forms to compare one, two or more
nouns which are words describing persons, places and
things.

So, our topic for today class is all about degrees of

comparison of adjectives and there are three degrees of
comparison class.

The first degree class is positive degree

Based on sentence number 1 class when can we say that When describing only one person.
the adjective is in the positive degree?

When we say positive degree class it simply describes

one person, object or place.

Just like in sentence number 1. We simply describe

jane’s hair which is long. So we talk only 1 person.
Again when do we use the positive degree class?
When we are describing only one person

The next degree is comparative. From the word itself Compare

class when do we use the comparative degree? How many
person where being compared? 2

From the word itself class you are now comparing 2

person. So we describe/compare 2 persons. Just like in
sentence number 2. We compare jane’s hair to anne’s
hair.

Are you still with me claas? Yes, teacher

Again, when do we use the comparative degree? When we are comparing 2 persons, places or objects.

The last one is superlative, when wesay superlative class,

how many person where being compared? Or described?
Take a look in sentence number.

So there are rules in comparing adjectives class.

1. When the word has only one syllable, you will
simply add er to the comparative degree and -est to the
superlative degree.
Ex. Long-longer-longest
Light-lighter-lightest

2. When the adjective ends in y, change y to I and

then add -er in comparative degree and -est in
superlative degree.
Ex. Angry-angrier-angriest
Happy-happier-happiest
Funny-funnier-funniest

3. When adjective ends in e drop e and add -er or -

est.
Ex. Wise-wiser-wisest

4. When adjectives end in consonant that follows a

vowel you double the last consonant before adding -er or
-est.
Ex. Fat-fatter-fattest

5. Adjectives of more than one syllable are compared

by using modifiers more/most and less /least.
Ex. Intillegent-more/less intillegent-most/least
intillegent

So, these are the rules of degrees of comparison of

adjectives

(LET THE PUPILS READ ALL EXAMPLES)

3. Abstraction/Generalization

(give or ask students the summary of the discussion)

What do you mean by degrees of comparison? Degrees of Comparison - refers to adjectives being written in different
forms to compare one, two or more nouns which are words describing
persons, places and things.

What are the three degrees of comparison class? Positive, Comparative and Superlative

When do we use the positive degree? When we describe one person only.
When do we use the comparative degree? When we compare 2 person, places or things.

When do we use the superlative degrees of comparison? When we compare more than 2 persons, places or things.

Give me the comparative degree of the word weak? Weaker, weakest

How about ugly Uglier-ugliest

Since you have mastered already the degrees of

comparison , I have here an activity.
