Narrative Report

INTRODUCTION

On-the-Job Training involves the acquisition of specific skills and employment

competencies through exposure in an actual work setting to the processes, tasks tools and

methods of a specific job or group of jobs. Training guides and familiarizes me with working life

situations, and helps me apply the knowledge and skills I have required.

On-the-Job Training or Practicum is a big a big thing for a student like me. It is where I

realize if I am really fit in the course, and if I really want my chosen field or career. It is also an

outlet to build myself. I can also gain more self- confidence and self-esteem. More than the

learning, I can acquire the discipline and values I get from the people I work with and the

experiences that would teach me essential things. It is also a way to develop my social abilities in

gaining new friends and knowing new people in the work place. I also learn to adjust with the

different and attitude of workmates. It would be easy for me to adjust in the future.

First of all I would like to thank F. Gurrea Construction Inc. for giving me the chance to

do my Internship program. As a trainee, I was assigned first in the Human Resource Department

from 5th of December 2016 until 3rd of January 2017 only for we had a rotation so, I experienced

and gain knowledge of the work in other departments. I got acquainted with my superior to the

whole department. During my training I have gained a lot of inputs and knowledge here.

very well.

PRINCIPLES, CONCEPTS AND SKILL

On my first day of training I was very nervous, but the people I worked with made it very

enjoyable. My training at the construction company was very challenging but fun, because I

learned a lot. I applied my knowledge I had learned in school like personality development and

etiquette. It also helped me to build confidence and boost enthusiasm with my co-workers and

customers. I also applied the do’s and don’ts in the workplace and the positive thoughts and

actions. I learned to be flexible and to work effectively. My 400 hours of training I can say that

the course I enrolled is exactly what I want, and I will probably stay in this profession for as long

as job opportunities are present. I know the 400 hours is not enough to fully understand the real

situation while working in the word but I am sure I can cope easily with whatever my future job

will be. I am grateful that I will be entering a new chapter in my life after OJT and graduation.

During my days of training I familiarized myself with the tasks given to me. But just in

real life, we can’t avoid to commit mistakes. No one is perfect. I remember one time when I

committed a mistake, they didn’t blame me. Instead they taught me how to do the task correctly.

Sometimes the more we commit mistakes the more we learn a lesson, because they say we learn

from our mistakes. In the future, I’ll apply those things that I learned during my training.

MAJOR LEARNINGS

Throughout my 25 weeks of training at F. Gurrea Construction Inc. I did my best to make

it more efficient and challenging. I had the opportunity to learned and gained valuable

experience. I learned a lot of things during my OJT. I was exposed to not only the actual office

environment but also to realized what I really want in life even before the time I graduate. What

a career I would want to have. There are many important things I learned. First I need to please

everyone and try as much as I can to be polite and nice to everyone .I must do it with sincerity,

for when one is kind to people the same kindness will returns to him. I have to smile always too.

I was able to learn how to accept small or big mistakes. I learned how to face the real world and

talked to different people. In my first day as a trainee , I thought I was not able to do well but as

time passed by I gained more self confidence and self esteem. I learned also how important time

management is in the practicum. I also learned that sometimes I may fail and get criticized, but I

had take it as a challenge to improve more and to move forward instead of pushing myself

downwards.

The training also taught me to be efficient and responsible in performing tasks assigned to me,

and to be independent to learn and explore new things. The problems that I had encountered

make me strong and determined to continue.

I’m happy and fulfilled being part of FGCI. The whole OJT experience was a great

memory to remember.

The entire task that was given to me requires cooperation between other colleagues. I have

already able to work as a team and be a team player. In fact it has improved my proficiency in

English, and gained more knowledge in Microsoft word and Word excel.

OJT in FGCI helped me to prepare myself for the future employment. It also helped me

to become more efficient in dealing with other people around me. Experience is the best teacher

and nothing compares to the knowledge that it can give to us. I found it be hard at first, but I

learned to appreciate and love what I was doing. Later, became easier and easier every day. I

realized that problems in life are like problems in work, we must search for the best solution. We

can’t solve some problems by ourselves; we can seek the help of our co-workers, co-trainees and

employees. It’s like the saying, “No man is an island”. In life, we need the help of other people

to overcome the problems in our life.

PERSONAL FEELINGS AND OBSERVATIONS

It happened at the Madison Hotel. Memorable event was our Christmas party. All the

members of the staff of Human Resource Department were there. Every one presented something

as a production number and received. Our group did not sing well, but it was alright. Everybody,

including the staff is happy and cooperates in every game organizers have held and even our

bosses participate with us. After the program we had the raffle draw. We trainees didn’t expect

we were included and they also announced we have something for us.

Last December 23, 2016 we had our Corporate Christmas party at the Grand Hotel. All

employees and OJTs was required to attend. I was excited and nervous because it was my first

time to attend this kind of event and with a lots of attendees and curious at the time what would

be happen. I really enjoyed that night because I had a chance to see their talents, to know them

more and get more friends. I was also happy because I had the chance to socialize with different

people. We we’re all tired but happy, satisfied of that memorable affair.

Company History

Like most business endeavors, FGCI had modest beginnings. In 1982, the Company

kicked off as a single proprietorship with the initial acquisition of two dump trucks for the sole

purpose of delivering filling materials and undertaking small scale contracts. In a span of three

(3) years, prudent management in the brisk construction industry propelled the proprietorship to

new heights. The proprietorship succeeded in broadening its client base by augmenting the

quantity of its hauling equipment. Emboldened by its upswing, the proprietorship embarked on

the ambitious plan of penetrating the construction business.

In 1992, with the strong determination and dedication of its workforce, the organization

upgraded its status to a corporation to further strengthen its financial and operational capabilities.

From a small scale business, FGCI became a leader in the local construction industry, not only in

one or two lines of endeavors, but in practically all types of infrastructure projects. Eventually,

FGCI diversified its activities to cope with the growing demands brought about by the

government’s focus on infrastructure as a means to improve the nation’s company. To date, the

Company can boast of a wide array of heavy duty machinery and equipment.

Throughout the years, FGCI maintained a remarkable performance record. It was not long before

FGCI upgraded its classification to a large “AAA” construction company engaged in both

General Building and General Engineering as certified by the inter-Agency Committee for

Registration and Classification of Contractors. In 2011, FGCI earned the internationally-

recognized ISO 9001-2008 Quality Management System Certification from the International

Organization for Standardization.

In the light of the aforementioned progressive and bold steps, FGCI will certainly attain its vision

to be one of the country’s active partners in the construction business, and ultimately, in nation-

building.

APPLICATION OF THEORIES

I had learned several lessons in the classroom which I applied during my OJT. First,

Interpersonal Relationship. I learn how to communicate with others; I can work harmoniously

with employers, workers and customers. I also gain self confidence and maturity the qualities

that are needed in the workplace which establish and maintain positive mutual working

relationships with them.. Second, Teamwork, it is really important in any organization because if

we have a team work we work as one to achieve our goal in the spirit of cooperation, respect and

trust. Third, Professional Behavior, I learned how to act professionally and I was able to maintain

my behavior in and outside the establishment even though I got tired or stressed. Fourth,

13
University of Antique
College of Business And Accountancy
Sibalom, Antique

Politeness. We should respect our employer and co-workers all the time. Always greet the clients

and co-workers and co-trainees and smile at them all the time. Lastly, Time Management, to be a

productive person you need to be punctual. There’s a saying “Time is gold”. Every second of our

life counts and it’s really important. We should not waste our time and we should have a proper

time for each specific action.

I also learned Good customer service skills and an ability to organize oneself are the

backbone to a career in office administration. Whether you have one call all day or two clients

from your face, you have always remembered to greet people and provide client relations.

Always be friendly and courteous. It is essential to dress professionally and accordingly. No

matter how earth shattering, your troubles shouldn’t have an influence on your good manners.

Computer literacy, knowledge of computer use and being able to understand application

programs used in office. Communication skills are also important. Have good written and oral

communication skills because office work involves creating report summaries and written

documents in English. Organization, the ability to establish priorities systematically,

differentiates between urgent, important and unimportant tasks. Planning skills, the ability to

create systematic procedures or routines and schedule meetings and other activities ahead of

time. Patience is also important when handling all personality types and work challenges because

one will be working under higher authority as well as other people.

RECOMMENDATION

Firstly, I want to suggest for the Human Resources to provide a meeting with the students

weekly or monthly to ensure the welfare of the students are not ignored. It is important for

ensuring the health and fitness of the students in the company. I expect the company will have a

suitable place or room for trainees so that they can have a place to do their reports and

communicate with other trainees for more knowledge and they can get to know each other.

Moreover, I hope supervisors could improve motivation session to the trainees so that they can

be more competitive and motivated. This can improve trainee’s skills, knowledge and expertise

on certain matters.

Encourage open communication, be open-minded and encourage them to express their

ideas and perspective without criticism. It is important to the employee by using surveys,

suggestion boxes and team meetings. Address their concerns in the best way you can. Create a

strong team environment, strong employee engagement is dependent on how well employees get

along, interact with each other and participate in a team environment. Support employees in their

work and growth, you can support employee growth by providing education and learning

opportunities, cross training, coaching and other interactions that support employees personal

development. Collaborate and share problem solving, when employees get the idea that their

manager or leader is the one who has to solve all the problems, it takes away from their sense

empowerment, and ultimately is likely to decrease engagement overtime. Encourage team

members to take responsibility, and work everyone else problems.

15
University of Antique
College of Business And Accountancy
Sibalom, Antique

Employees don’t leave a company, they leave their manager. If you want to reduce

turnover, improve the number and quality of your managers. The lack of employee

engagement is a real problem, but effective managers can make a difference.

OBSERVATION AND CONCERN

In the beginning, working with people one has just first met is something different and

something that is hard to do. Hard inside that you can’t say anything or do anything because he

might offend them. I have become an observant and a listener to the people I worked with. As

days went on, friendship and understanding with each other was built. I have worked with

different people with different kinds of attitude and behavior. One of the most I encounter is

those who are jolly and friendly. They are the ones who help a person shows who really is. They

ask you many personal questions, on past experiences and they share some of theirs. They also

teach a person you how to be positive and encourage you more to do the things that makes you

happy. As a trainee I never avoid those who are strict and what they called killjoys. Sometimes

you may handle them but sometimes you’ll just avoid them. They are those co-workers that is

more standard operations. But though they are like that I assure you you’ll learn from them.

My over all observation is that we must value the people, who work for the company. I

have seen the benefits. For example, if the employees’ birthday they give the amount of 300.00

16
University of Antique
College of Business And Accountancy
Sibalom, Antique

to that person as a gift and they are allowed to leave to celebrate their special day. Also if the

employee 10 years or more serving in their company they give a person a loyalty award and a

reward like appliances and etc. Also they have a meeting for all the Department heads every day

to tackle what is the needs of the company, the needs of their customer and the people who work

for the company and to ensure that they can solve the problems for the success of the company.

The host training establishment’s life in F. Gurrea Construction Incorporated gives a lot

of opportunity to new graduates and new entrants because they offer good working environment.

Working with FGCI is such a journey. All OJTs experienced different things while working in a

real world. Professional care must be exercised at all times. Employees exercise competence and

care in doing their assignments.
