TRANSCRIPTION
1. What nitrogen base is present in RNA, but not in DNA? (Uracil)
2. What is the process of taking information from DNA (genes) and transferring it to mRNA? (Transcription)
3. In which part of the cell does transcription occur ? (nucleus)
4. What is the complementary mRNA strand for the following DNA sequences? 5’ ACCGTAAT 3’ (3’UGGCAUUA5’)
5. What enzyme is involved in the process of making a strand of mRNA from DNA during transcription? (RNA
Polymerase)
TRANSLATION
1. In which part of the cell does translation take place? (cytoplasm)
2. What structure on a tRNA is complementary to a codon on mRNA? (anticodon)
3. What is the three “letter” sequence on mRNA that codes for an amino acid? (codon)
4. What describes how a sequence of nucleotides specifies the amino acid sequence of a protein? (Genetic code)
5. What is a change in the genetic code? (mutation)

PICTURE ANALYSIS
https://www.sciencelearn.org.nz/resources/1328-mistakes-in-dna
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the type of mutation that occurred in the DNA structure.
2. Describe the results of chromosomal aberrations.
II. MATERIALS: Normal DNA , Mutated DNA and Genetic Code Chart
III. PROCEDURES:
In each of the following DNA sequences, you will use the mRNA and amino acid sequences to identify the
mutation that occurred and the effects of each on, if any. Look and analyze carefully! Circle the change in the DNA
sequence and classify each as either Deletion, Insertion, or Substitution and as either frameshift, missense, silent or
nonsense (hint: deletion or insertion will always be frameshift).
IV. ANALYSIS:
1. What kind of mutation is more likely to result in a nonfunctional protein?
2. Differentiate frameshift mutation from point mutation.
