contain diagrams and drawings, preferably in
color. The visual learner can't concentrate with
a lot of activity around him and will focus better
and learn faster in a quiet study environment.

“Blow Drying Procedures”

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define what Hair Blow Drying is;
2. Name the different materials needed in blow drying;
3. Enumerate and explain the different Blow Drying Procedures

Hair blow drying is an act of arranging the hair while drying it with a
handheld dyer.

Correct blow drying will not harm your hair

– it’s applying heat to your hair when it’s already
dried that causes damage. Moisture content is
just as important to the health and beauty of your
hair as it is to your skin. It’s what helps keep
your strands nourished and elastic. While the
correct use of a blow-dryer will not harm your
hair, applying heat to your hair when it is already
dried causes brittleness, breakage, dullness and
dryness. The secret of safe drying is good timing
and the proper use of tools and products.
Figure 1. Hair Blower

HOW TO DRY YOUR HAIR CORRECTLY

TOWEL DRYING
Press your hair with a towel to remove excess moisture. Rubbing your
hair can rough up the cuticles of your hair and also break and tangle it.
Follow by gently removing tangles with a wide-toothed comb, starting at the
ends and working up to your roots.

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO BLOW-DRYING
What You'll Need
 Freshly shampooed and conditioned hair
 A towel
 A wide-tooth comb
 Straightening balm / hair protection product
 Sectioning clips
 A round brush

Step 1 - Shampoo and condition the hair

using good formulas which are designed to
help dry and style the hair faster.

Image 1. Step 1

Step 2 - Use an extra absorbent towel to

dry the hair as much as possible. The hair
should be damp, but not dripping.

Image 2. Step 2

Step 3 - Remove all of the tangles from the hair

with a wide-tooth comb. Start from the bottom of
the strands and work your way up, remembering
to be gentle.

Step 4 - Apply a small amount of straightening
balm to palms and rub together to heat the
product up before raking the hands through the
hair. It's also a good idea to use a heat protection
product and any other styling products which
may help to speed up the drying process.

Image 4. Step 4

Step 5 - Blast the hair with a hair-dryer set on

medium heat to get the hair about 80 percent dry.
Using an ionic hair-dryer will help to minimize any
damage that may be caused by the heat and will
give a smoother finish.

Image 5. Step 5

Step 6 - Put the hair-dryer down and clip away

all of the partly dried hair except for the section
you want to work on.

Image 6. Step 6

Step 7 -Roll the sectioned hair around a round

brush and move your hair-dryer back and forth
constantly over the hair section.

Step 8 - Put your hair-dryer down and unroll
your hair from the brush and give it a quick run
through with your fingers. Repeat steps 6 to 8
until hair is completely straightened.

Image 8. Step 8

Step 9 - Finish with a light finishing product

to keep hair in place and smooth any fly-
aways. If necessary, run a straightening iron
over the hair cuticles to ensure a completely
smooth look.

Image 9. Step 9

Image 10. Step 10

It is here that damage is most likely to occur, so make sure to check

your hair often. When your hair is almost dry, turn down the heat and
reduce the speed of your dryer. Ideally, it is best for your hair if you leave it
slightly damp. But if you need your hair absolutely dry it is very important
to stop blow-drying at the right time. Applying heat, even for a few seconds,
to hair that has already been dried can dry out the moisture in your hair
cells. This can cause brittleness, dullness, breakage, and split ends.

If you have limp (weak), thin or straight hair, try turning your hair
upside down as you finish blow-drying for extra body and volume. Bend over
and, still using the hairdryer, let your hair hang down towards the floor.
Gently brush or comb your hair in this direction with the dryer following
behind. This will give your hair more lift and bounce and decreases the
likelihood of tangles.

Tips

 Use a nozzle attachment on your hair-dryer.

 Round brushes shape and add body.
 Finishing with cool air will set the shape and close the cuticle, which
will add shine.
 Style with a clean brush - wash your brushes every 2 weeks with a
little shampoo and warm water.
 When blow-drying around the front and top layers, use your brush to
hold your hair up and out to the side so that your hair will fall back
sleekly rather than puffy.
 To blow-dry a cow-licked bang, hold your hair down with your hands
and then blast your roots with hot air. After a few seconds, pull away
your blow-dryer and continue holding your hair down with your hand
until your hair has cooled. Repeat the steps until your bangs stays
put.

Information Sheet 7.3-1

“PROTECTIVE HAIR PRODUCTS”

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Identify the different protective hair products
2.Explain the purpose of each hair product;
3. Differentiate the protective hair products with each other

Any hair care expert will tell you that in order to prevent hair from
becoming damaged and broken, it is crucial to apply some sort of heat
protectant, like a heat protection spray, serum or cream. You’ve missed a
step if you subject your strands to high temperatures from irons and dryers
without one.
Here’s what happen: Blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons weaken
and destroy vital proteins in your hair, as well as deplete your hair’s natural
oils. That means frequent use of them requires extra maintenance.
The best part is that these products don’t just keep your hair form
getting fried – they also add shine, de-frizz and help straighten and smooth
your hair texture. Once applied, you can heat style your hair with
confidence.

1. Special shampoos, balms and conditioners – Choose

the ones "for intensive moisture" or "for disobedient hair".
They nourish and soften hair and contain various vitamins.
Unfortunately, the hair will not become perfectly straight;
however, it will be more tameable, less frizzy during damp
weather and will be less likely to dry out whilst drying.

Special shampoos may contain chemical materials that

give hair "weight"; due to this, hair is less likely to
curl and go back to its natural state. For example, these
chemical materials can include lauryl sulphate, sodium
lauryl sulphate, sodium hydroxide, panthenol, silicon
and glycerine that weight the hair down.

Furthermore, the shampoo may contain various oils (such as olive or
avocado oil), amino acids, keratin, silk proteins, vitamin B5, extracts from
medicinal herbs and wheat protein. Pay attention to the amount of silk
protein in the shampoo; it helps to straighten the hair. The effect can be
enhanced by other hair products, such as hairspray, hair mousse and hair
gel.

2. Special straightening ointments– they nourish hair

and make it "heavier", thus keeping it straight. The
downside is that hair becomes greasy faster. The
ointment should be applied with a special brush on
clean, dry hair and kept on for around 30 – 45 minutes.
After that, the hair should be rinsed
with warm water and shampoo.
It is best to stick to the directions.

Picture 3. Sample straightening

ointment

3. Serums for hair straightening – This

must be applied on clean, dry hair by
equally dividing it over the entire length.
After the hair dries (either naturally or by
a hairdryer on a cold air setting), you
have to brush it out and apply the serum
for a second time. The serum can be used
as an auxiliary method for hair
straightening by a hair iron. What is
more, it protects hair from the damage Picture 4. Sample serum
caused by high temperatures. The
serum should be chosen according to your hair type and be applied in small
amounts so that the hair doesn’t look greasy or messy.

These are the few of many products commonly used by hairdressers with its
affordable prices:
1. Keratin Complex Intense RX Ionic Keratin
Restructing Serum
This is a great brand to turn to when in search of
the best at home straightening products. Hair
straightening products by Keratin brand are pricey, but

“HAIR IRON”

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Explain the purpose of a straightening iron;
2.Identify the prescribed temperature setting of a certain hair type;
3. Enumerate the procedure on how to use the straightening iron in
hair straightening.

Hair iron or hair tong is a tool used to change the structure of the
hair using heat. There are three general kinds: curling irons, used to make
the hair curly, straightening irons, commonly called straighteners of flat
irons, used to straighten the hair, and crimping irons, used to create crimps
of the desired size in the hair. Most models have electric heating; cordless
curling irons or flat irons typically use butane, and some flat irons use
batteries that can last up to 30 minutes for straightening. Overuse of these
tools can cause severe damage to hair.

TYPES OF HAIR IRON

Curling Irons- also know s as curling tongs, create waves or curls in hair
using a variety of different methods. There are many different types of
modern curling irons, which can vary by diameter, material, and shape of
barrel and the type of handle. The barrel’s diameter can be anywhere from .5
in (1.3 cm) to 2 in (5.1 cm). Smaller barrels typically create spiral curls or
ringlets, and larger and larger barrels are used to give shape and volume to
a hairstyle.

Straightening Irons – or
straighteners, or flat iron
work by breaking down
the positive hydrogen
bonds found in the hair’s
cortex, which cause hair
to open, bend and
become curly. Once the
bonds are broken, hair is Figure 2. Straightening Iron
prevented from holding its original, natural form, though the hydrogen
bonds can re-form if exposed to moisture. Straightening irons use mainly
ceramic material for their plates. Low-end straighteners use a single layer of
ceramic coating on the plates, whereas high-end straighteners use multiple
layers on even 100% ceramic material. Some straightening irons are fitted
with an automatic shut off feature to prevent fire accidents.
Ceramic and electrical straighteners were introduced, allowing adjustment
of heat settings and straightener size. A ceramic hair straightener brush was
patented in 2013. Sharon Rabi released the first straightening brush in
2015 under the DAFNI brand name. The ceramic straightening brush has a
larger surface area than a traditional flat iron

Crimping Irons – or crimpers work by crimping hair in sawtooth style. The

look is similar to the crimps left after taking out small braids. Crimping
irons come in different sizes with different sized ridges produce larger crimps
in the hair and smaller ridges produce smaller crimps. Crimped hair was
very popular in the 1980s and 1990s.

There is apparently a perfect temperature for your flat iron, and this is it.
It's the key to that soft straight shiny thing you're always going for.

There is a precise temperature at which you should be straightening

your hair. And yes, it's a Goldilocks situation: Too low, and your hair
becomes dull and lifeless. Too high, and you can fry your hair—and even
cause irreversible damage.

WHY TEMPERATURE IS IMPORTANT

Is temperature really that important? As long as the flat iron is hot,
it'll get the job done, right? Well, yes and no. If your flat iron is hot, then yes,
it will straighten your hair. However, it could well be too hot or too cold to do
the job properly. If the irons are too cold, then you're to go over the same
sections of hair over and over again. That means you're going to damage the
hair through constant heat, and it's going to look lifeless. If they're too hot,
you'll be doing instant damage every time you break the flat irons out. Like
Goldilocks, you'll want a temperature that's just right.

According to researchers, 365°F is what you want your flat iron to

be. That temperature allows the most styling benefits in the fewest strokes,
helping hair retain moisture and easily sealing the cuticle—which leaves
your locks shiny, smooth, and resistant to humidity.

On the other hand, setting your iron sometimes depends on you and
your hair. Everyone's hair is different, and has different needs.

The temperature you need will depend on several factors, such as the
thickness of your hair, whether it's already suffered damage, and how it
reacts to heat.. Once you find the temperature that works for you, keep the
dial set to it.

A higher temp is just unnecessary heat, and once you reach 420°F
you can create a lot of problems, since this is the temp where keratin
protein starts to melt—something you can't repair.

To make sure you have your hair game on point, buy an adjustable
iron and set it to 365F.

THE DANGERS OF HAVING THE HEAT TOO HIGH

Many people like to crank the temperature up and keep it there, in the
belief that it's much quicker to style your hair that way. In reality, it's really
not going to work and all you're doing is damaging your hair. This is
because when you subject your hair to high heats, it cracks the cuticle of
the hair shaft. this lets more damage happen to the hair, exposing it to
chemicals, sunlight, and other harmful substances. Instead, you want to do
the temperature test seen above, and stick to the heat level that works for
you.

HOW TO STOP FURTHER HAIR DAMAGE

If your hair has been damaged by heat, all is not lost. You can still use
your flat irons and get the look you want, you just need to be careful. First
of all, invest in a good heat protectant, like an argan oil heat protectant
spray. This will create a layer between your hair and the flat irons,
absorbing a good deal if the heat and saving it from further damage.

Also, try giving the flat irons a rest when you can. The less you use
them, the less further damage you'll do to your hair. Get your flat irons and
get testing for your personal temperature.

“HAIR SECTIONING”

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define the meaning of hair sectioning;
2.Identify the steps in hair sectioning in 3, 4, and 7 sections;
3. Perform hair sectioning

Sectioning is the key to a successful application of Hair Color or Color

Remover. It can be used when doing a full Color or Color Remover, re-growth
touch up or applying highlights, and straightening hair. By sectioning your
hair it gives you an easier way to guarantee a complete and even coverage.

HAIR SECTIONING (3 SECTIONS)

Divide your hair into three layers for

best straightening results. Sections are the
easiest way to ensure you don't miss any
strands with your flat iron.
The thicker the hair, the more layers you'll

thumbs behind your ears and pull the hair
up, gliding your thumbs across the back of
your head until they meet in the middle.

shaft outward from your head.
For pin-straight, divide each layer into small sections. Glide the
straightener only a few times over each section before moving along.[5]
If your prefer smoother hair, divide it into larger sections. Then clamp the
flat iron tightly and run it over each part slowly, ensuring the heat
penetrates each section but with less direct contact.

Sectioning Hair with 7-section Parting

The scalp is divided into seven sections: top, right side, left side, right
crown, left crown, right nape and left nape. In addition a one-half inch band
of hair is left to hang loose around the perimeter of the hair line. Above are
some photos which show exactly what is intended.

You start by making a clean parting line from

the point just behind the ears on one side to the
matching point on the opposing side. Next, make
parting lines on each side of the head just along
the parietal ridge to isolate the hair at the top of the
head. Comb the hair smooth toward the center of
the section at the top of the head and twist it up
into a knot and clip with a butterfly clip to secure it.
Do the same on the right and left sides of the head.

Figure 8. Left Side

Now, create a parting line down the center of the

back of the head. Isolate the Right and Left Crown
sections by parting the hair in a line from behind
the ears to the center parting just created. These
horizontal partings should meet
to form a straight horizontal line

1. Identify the necessary tools in hairdressing that needs to be
handled and stored properly;
2. Enumeratethe proper handling of tools in hairdressing;
3. Elaborate the proper handling of tools in hairdressing

Hairdressers are professionals who cut and style air. From simple
trims to elaborate updos, hairdressers are trained to perform many hair care
services for their clients. If you’re interested to familiarize yourself with the
tools you will use in your work. While there are dozens of different types of
hairdressing tools, some are more important than others and essential for
any hairdresser to have.
You must always use your tools correctly. For example, scissors are
extremely sharp and accidents can occur. Always carry your scissors with
the blades closed and keep them in a cutting case. Your scissors are likely to
be the most expensive item in your tool collection, and dropping them with
the blades open or pointing downwards can be very costly and affect the
position of the blades.
Here are the proper handling and storing procedures for you to follow
to have a safe and organized working environment.

“OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY RULES AND

REGULATIONS”

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Enumerate the occupational health and safety rules and
regulations in hairdressing;
2. Explain the occupational health and safety rules and regulations in
hairdressing;
3.Identify the risks and accidents of the hairdressers and the client

Hair and beauty businesses must meet and maintainhigh standards

of health, safety and hygiene sothat they present no risk to clients and
employeesand remain inspiring and successful in a growingindustry.

Up to 70 per cent ofhairdressers suffer fromskin damage caused by

waterand chemicals used at work. Accidents, both at home and at work, are
on the increase, and while itwill never be possible to prevent accidents,
everyone has a responsibilityto try to make the workplace as safe as they
can.

Yourworkplace will have its own rules and guidelines for keeping
employees and the general public safe. These are called workplace policies
or codes of practice. In this section, you will learn about how the workplace
can be made a safer and healthier place to work in.

Employer and Employee Responsibilities

Both the employer and employee have a duty and responsibilities
toensure that the workplace is comfortable, warm and clean so that
theenvironment is a satisfying and safe place to visit and work in.

Fire policies
All workplaces must, by law, carry out a fire risk assessment and
yearly fire drill. Weekly fire alarm tests are essential toensure the alarm
works, and staff must be trained to evacuate thebuilding safely.

To prevent a fire breaking out, you should:
 Leave all doors unlocked wherever possible.
 Keep flammableproducts away from heat.
 Report anything that you think may be a fire hazard.
 Don’t block doorways and exits.
 Don’t smoke inside the premises.
 Don’t warm towels on electric or gas heaters.
Evacuation procedure
 It is important to know the nearest exit and escape route shouldyou
need to evacuate the building. Escape routes should be
clearlysignposted with large print or illuminated exit signs.
 All workplaces must have fire-fighting equipment that is easy to
accessand in working order. There are different fire extinguishers for
differenttypes of fire but unless you have had training, it is best not to
try to putout the fire yourself as you could put yourself and others at
risk. Verysmall fires can be put out using a fire blanket or a bucket of
sand.

Evacuation Instruction Chart

First aid
First aid is the initial help given to someone who has hurt
themselvesor become ill. It is the treatment given before emergency
medicalhelp arrives. If you’re at the scene of an accident, or during a
medicalemergency, you should:
 Stay calm.
 Look for continuing danger both to the casualty and yourself.

 Decide whether to call for emergency help.
 Listen to the person and talk quietly to them.
 Keep the person warm with a blanket but do not allow them to gettoo
hot.

First aid does not involve:

Giving medicines or tabletsmoving a person who has fallen and who
might have broken bones. The Health and Safety Regulations 1981 state that
there should be amember of staff who is trained in first aid. Once trained,
the person willbe qualified for three years, after which they will need to re-
train.

Hot and cold running water

The water supply is used for sanitizing hands and tools, cleaning
theroom and the treatments. There must be a constant supply of hot
andcold running water, and each treatment room or area should have
itsown sink.
Don’t:
 leave taps running
 flush semi-solid materials or liquids down the sink
 tip chemicals, solvents or cleaning agents into the sink.
Do report immediately to your supervisor if you see:
 a blocked sink – to avoid it overflowing
 water that is discoloured as it comes out of a tap
 leaks, loose taps or cracked pipes.

Lighting
Lighting affects the atmosphere and ambience of the business. Thewrong
lighting can have a disastrous effect on how visitors andemployees feel.

Your responsibilities include:

 Make sure the light is bright enough for you to see clearly.
 Make sure the light is not so bright that you become disorientated.
 Report flickering or faulty lights to your supervisor.

Heat and ventilation

The ideal working temperature is between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.
The level of moisture in the air should be between 30 and 70 percent. The
most efficient heating system for a salon is thermostaticallycontrolled gas
central heating.
Ventilation is needed to ensure circulation of fresh air. The
diagrambelow shows what can happen if there is an inadequate supply of
freshair in a workplace. Methods of ventilation include extractor
fans, windows and doors, air vents and flues.

Cleaning, Sterilizing and Disinfecting Tools
Workplace hygiene is essential for a safe environment. Infections can
be easily passed from person to person via direct or indirect contact– this is
known as cross-infection.
Direct contact occurs when an infection passes from one person
toanother through:
 touching the skin
 sneezing
 coughing
 breathing
Indirect contact occurs when infection passes from one person toanother
through an unclean object, for example a towel or bedding ordirty
equipment and tools.
Preventing the spread of bacteria
 Sanitization
Regular cleaning and washing using warm soapy water promoteshealth by
removing dirt and reducing the growth of germs andbacteria. You can wash
your hands with soap and water or use analcohol-based hand sanitizer.
 Disinfection
This is a form of cleaning suitable for surfaces such as trolleys
andequipment. It reduces the number of germs and bacteria so that theyare
not harmful to health. Most disinfectant solutions are alcohol orbleach
based.
 Sterilization
Sterilization kills germs and bacteria and is used for tools andequipment as
well as surfaces. Methods are dry heat, steamsterilization or sterilization
fluids.

Safe and hygienic waste disposal

Within hair and beauty, many treatments generate waste that couldbe
contaminated, for example hair removal, piercing, hair cutting andshaving.
Although these treatments do not normally cause bleeding,an accidental
skin cut with scissors or blood spotting from waxingcould occur. For this
reason, there should be another method ofwaste disposal provided.
Treatments such as epilation, which involvesinserting a probe (needle) into
the hair follicle, requires all used probesto be disposed of in a sharps box
and then incinerated.

Eating, Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace

Smoking, alcohol and drugs

The workplace must be smoke, drug and alcohol free. Alcohol
anddrugs affect a person’s ability to use equipment and products safelyand
to judge dangers. They can also affect their personality which maybe
upsetting for clients and staff. Clients under the influence of alcoholor drugs
may have an unfavorable reaction to products or treatments.

The smell of cigarettes can cling to clothing, breath and body, which
isunpleasant for the client, and non-smoking clients may not re-book. A
client who smokes will need to follow the non-smoking guidelines ofthe
salon while they are there.

Food and Drink

Food and drink must not be consumed in the workplace, except in
adesignated area such as a staff room or kitchen. There should be
arefrigerator to keep food cool. It is unprofessional for staff to be seeneating
and drinking and is also unhygienic as particles of food left onthe floor or
work surfaces can become a breeding ground for germsand may attract
insects which can carry harmful bacteria.

Health and safety symbols

The symbols below show at a glance how a chemical is hazardousand
must, by law, appear on products that contain dangerouschemicals.

Hairdressing accidents
Hairdressers and barbers apply chemicals to our hair and skin, they
may shave us, wash us and blow dry us. Such commonplace invasion of our
privacy is obviously regulated in some way, right? Wrong. The hairdressing
business is unregulated. It does have a national body, which keeps a register,
but it is voluntary scheme and there is no industry standard qualification for
hairdressers and no independent oversight. So the local authority have no
information on the hairdressing salons and self employed hairdressers in its
borough, and it has no right to inspect premises and no power to investigate
complaints.

And there are complaints against hairdressers, quite a lot of them. In

2010 the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers carried out some research
amongst its membership of nearly 5000 solicitors and learned of more than

350 cases of injuries – from burns to baldness and even blindness – at the
hands of hairdressers in that year alone.

Risk of injuries at a hairdresser

It is not so much the cutting of the hair that causes the problems but
the use of substances on the hair and scalp and the application of heat.

The most common danger of injury arises from the use of chemicals,
including PPD for dyeing and peroxide for bleaching. When hair is coloured
with chemicals it is important to carry out hair strand and skin patch
testing to make sure that there will be no allergic reaction to the chemicals
used. Even then there are still risks, especially if insufficient time is allowed
after the test to gauge the result, or from leaving the chemicals in contact
with the skin too long. Customers should be asked some basic health
questions to minimise risk. For instance pregnant women should normally
be advised to avoid chemical treatments.

Dyes and bleaches are capable of causing burns, blistering and

inflammation to the skin, damage to the hair and even hair loss. Hair loss
and scarring can be a traumatic experience and it is not uncommon for the
injured person to suffer some psychological reaction in addition to the
physical damage.

Curls, waves and straightening require heat, and hair dryers, curling
tongs and straightening irons do get extremely hot. Carelessness or
inexperience can cause burns and hair damage from overheating.

But there are some forms of hair straightening, for instance Hair
Relaxers and the Brazillian Blow Dry, that use chemicals rather than heat to
treat frizzy and tangled hair. The Brazillian Blow Dry is popular but
controversial as it contains formaldehyde (known for its use in embalming
fluid).

Hairdressers themselves also face the risk of some occupational

diseases, such as dermatitis and latex allergy, from their work, and it is the
job of their employer to make sure that the risks are assessed and
minimised, so far as is possible.

Ways to Treat Chemical Burns on Scalp

Picture 1. Sample of
a man experiencing
burn on scalp

Medical treatment for chemical scalp burns can vary widely depending on
the offending chemical. If you've been burned by a hair-care product such as
a dye or a bleaching agent, you can most likely treat the area with the first-
aid methods. If you've been burned by an unknown or potentially extremely
caustic agent (such as a concentrated laboratory acid), you may need
immediate medical attention.

Treatments for Hair Dye Burns on Skin

Picture 2. Sample of
hair bleaching

Chemical burns to the scalp and skin can occur when dying or
highlighting hair. Hair dye strips the hair of natural pigment, and replaces
the color with a synthetic colorant. Minor irritation and redness is common,
but severe burns deep into the skin have not been commonly reported.
However, chemical burns can cause hair to break and stop growing in
burned areas. Scar tissue can form. The extent of the burn depends on the
amount of dye used, the amount of time the skin was exposed to the hair
dye and other factors. Treating the burn can be done at home; however,
some burns require professional medical help.
Things You'll Need:
 Running water
 Aloe vera gel
 Vitamin E capsules

Step 1
Rinse the hair dye immediately from the head if overwhelming stinging or
pain occurs. A minor tingling sensation may be common when dying hair,
but the skin should never feel uncomfortable. Use a copious amount of
water to rinse the dye out of the hair. Avoid getting dye into the eyes.

Step 2
Inspect the burn area and determine how severe the burn is. Slight redness
and irritation can be treated at home. Open wounds, blistering and direct
tissue damage are signs that emergency treatment is necessary—visiting a
doctor is recommended. Call 911 if feeling faint or weak, or if you are
vomiting or showing other physical symptoms of distress.

Step 3
Avoid treating hair with strong medicated shampoos such as dandruff
treatments. Only wash hair when necessary, allowing the scalp to heal. The
natural oils have been stripped from the scalp and the skin will feel very
tight and itchy. Do not cover the scalp in petroleum jelly—this is a common
myth. The ointment will not allow the skin to breath, increasing the healing
time.

Step 4
Apply aloe vera lotion directly to the scalp for minor burns. Massage the
clear gel into the scalp for cooling relief. Leave the gel on as long as desired.

Step 5
Open several vitamin E capsules using a needle and squeeze out the oils.
Rub the vitamin onto the burned skin area to promote healing of the scalp
and surrounding skin.

QUESTIONING TOOL with Model Answer
Satisfactory
Questions to probe the candidate’s underpinning knowledge
response
Extension/Reflection Questions Yes No
1. What do you do with the hair that has too much volume
before straightening it without getting any tangles at all?
Model Answer: Comb the client’s hair and section the hair so to
prevent tangles
2. How would you make your client feel comfortable within the
long hours of process?
Model Answer: Converse with her or give her something to read.
Be friendly and enthusiastic all the time to avoid awkward
environment.
3. How would you manage your work if there would only be 2
straightening iron with 5 clients in a day?
Model Answer: Make an appointment with the clients so not to
have you overloaded with the work and so that the client
receives the best accommodation they deserve.
4. What can you suggest to your client after having her hair
straightened?
Model Answer: Maintain putting heat protective hair products
such as serums, balm, and cream to maintain the shiny, glossy
look to the hair. Visit the salon regularly to check your hair –
probably do hair spa or hot-oil treatment.
Safety Questions
5. You suddenly burned the hair of your client. How would you
tell her?
Model Answer:You have to admit to her that it is your fault and
nobody else’s. Tell her slowly about it so not to risen up her
emotions abruptly. Deal with all the conditions she will give
and settle the problem the easy way so not to destroy your
reputation and your workplace.
6. The straightening iron had a tear on its wire and it suddenly
gets close to the client’s skin and caused it to electrify the
client. How would you treat the scenario?

7. Your client suddenly had a breathing difficulty because of the
smell of the products applied. How would you react to this
kind of scenario in the workplace?
Model Answer:If the client is having a hard time in breathing
due to the used products, directly improve ventilation of the
workplace – opening the windows, doors – or bring the patient
outside the workplace. The products used during the process
can cause suffocation of the people inside the workplace if the
area is too congested.
8. Why shouldn’t you eat in the workplace?
Model Answer: Staff and clients are only allowed to eat in a
particular area in the workplace such as in the kitchen. Eating
in the workplace can attract insects that might be a carrier of
harmful bacteria and the leftovers left on the floor can be a
breeding ground for germs.
Contingency Questions
9. What do you do when your employer tells you that she needs
to fire workers due to the decrease of income?
Model Answer: If I will be one of those employees who will get
fired, I cannot do anything about it since the company has
decided already. My experience would probably help me find a
new salon or I can probably start my own salon business.
10. What would you do if there’s a brownout in the middle of
your service?
Model Answer:Unplug every appliance that is in use for
everyone’s safety. Wait for the electricity to come back on.
11. How would you deal with a very demanding client?
Model Answer: If you can give what she asks, provide it. But if
you can’t, tell the client in a right way that you cannot give her
what she needs.
12. What do you do when your workplace has been caught in a
fire?
Model Answer: Take out all your clients first. Use the fire
extinguisher when you see the fire can still be manageable but
still call fire emergency hotline. If possible, take out the
important things that you can bring from the workplace.

the products in the proper place after use.
16. What would happen if a workplace does not have good
ventilation?
Model Answer: Bad ventilation causes suffocation to the clients
or to the staff due to the smell of the products used.
Rules and Regulations
17. A strict client suddenly smokes in your facility. How would
you approach him/her?
Model Answer: Approach him or her in a good way to stop
smoking or smoke outside since you have rules and regulations
inside the premises to be followed such as the “No Smoking”
rule for the safety of everyone in the workplace.
18. Your workplace should be safe all the time but fire can
possibly occur no matter how safe it may seem. How would
you help your clients get out of the room when you have told
them that your workplace has provided rules and regulations
for safety?
Model Answer: Seeing the emergency procedure chart on the
scene would be inappropriate, rather, guide your clients to the
way out from the workplace. On the daily procedure, inform
your clients that you have an emergency procedure chart posted
on the wall for them to read because anytime, accidents might
happen.

2.50 - 3.49 = Good/Satisfactory
1.50 – 2.49 = Fair/Adequate

General Interpretation:

The average rating for workshop layout and number of CBLM and also
Objectives of every training session is 3 which mean good/satisfactory, for
expected activities/outputs with an average score of 3.5 means very good/
very satisfactory. Finally, the general average is 3.75 thus the result shows it
is very good/ very satisfactory.

Recommendation:

Based from the results, it is highly recommended to improve CBLM content

and sufficiency of materials for effective learning. Workshop should be more
relevant to the CBT workshop for effective and efficient training of the
learners. Clarity of the objectives should be well explained and delivered
before the start of the training. Clarity of the whole instructions during the
training is highly recommended.

The pre-test and the post-test scores is generated and
represented by the graph above. The blue line represents the pre-test
scores while the red line represents the post-test scores. The red line
as shown in the graph is higher than the blue line which means that
the post-test scores are generally higher than the pre-test scores
although some students did not show much increase and other
trainees have maintained their scores as well.

Data analysis
In the Evaluation Questionnaire, more than half of the population
of 25 trainees gave an Outstanding rating to the Training
Methodology and Facilitator/ Trainer followed by the Program
Design and Organization.
The Pre-test and Post-test scores showed a significant increase in
scores from pre-test to post-test.

Conclusion
The results gives significance to the Competency Based Training
approach conducted in the training thus CBT is effective for the
improvement of the skills and attitudes of the trainees.

7. Recommendation
Based from the results, I highly recommend support to the
hairdressing education such as reproduction of more learning
materials during the training: printed, non-printed, tools and
equipment, supplies and materials, and facilities. Being competent in
the trade brings hairdressers to the business and industry that can
improve the economy and give state of the art features to the Filipinos
given their skills as highly competent.
