Week Nine – Editing

EDITING

How did you find the editing process? I found the editing process very enjoyable, I had all of the
footage that I needed so I had no problems when editing. I
was able to edit the production in the way that I envisioned in
my head so I was very proud of it. I finished it far quicker than I
expected so I was able to go through it and experiment with
new skills that I have never used before which allowed me to
be more creative.

What skills did you have to I used one of the skills that I researched earlier on which was
learn/develop during the editing parallel editing, I used it twice in my production, and both
process? were effective uses. Firstly I used it to show a travel montage
between two characters at the beginning, I then used it
during a phone call later on. Whilst editing this production I
perfected the skill of editing to the beat as I used it multiple
times throughout my production, I like using it because I think
that it is the most effective use of music and makes it feel like it
is a part of the production as when editing to the beat is done
well the music and footage go hand in hand and make the
edit run very smoothly, I feel that I accomplished this in my
production. I also made use of colour grading in my
production, this is a skill that I have not used a lot and it is still
something that I need to work on as I have not used it
effectively in this production as it is obvious that colour
correction has been used as some scenes are far too over
saturated and heavily tinted either orange or blue. A new skill
that I learnt was black video titles, I wanted to give my
production a unique title card and not just use the standard
text as it is my final major project so I wanted to put the extra
effort in to make it the best it can be, I researched on how to
make a variety of different title cards but I found that black
video was very simple to do and also fitted with the aesthetic
of my production.

process and explain what they show.

This is the final scene, you can see that I have used fast paced
editing because of the short clip lengths and all of the jump
cut as no transitions have been put in. You can also see all of
the sound effects that I have used, these are heavy breathing,
a heartbeat and a gun shot, I have used these to help build
tension in the scene. I also used music to build tension, the
music is the long track on the bottom, you can see where the
track swells and where it increases tempo, these work with the
footage to create tension.

Above you can see the introduction, the pink boxes are the
titles I used, for the first one you can see that I used black
video the create a title frame where the footage is shown
through the writing, this was a new skill for me, the other boxes
are just text which I give credit to the actors. You can see from
the way that the footage has been cut and the wave lengths
of the track at the bottom that I have cut this sequence to the
beat.

What issues did you have to When editing I found that some of my clips where far too over
overcome whilst editing? How did you exposed and I tried to mend this by reducing the exposure but
move past them? it did not completely solve to problem. I also had problems
with wind and other background noises that where very loud, I
reduced it in some clips but in shots where there was speech I
was not able to solve the problem.

Have you identified any scenes which Yes there are scenes in my production that are far too over
need re-shooting? Will you be able to exposed to the point where you almost cannot see anything
do this? at all. Also when there is wind blocking out speech, these all
need to be re-filmed but unfortunately I do not have time to
do this as I have left it too late.

Are you on track this week? If not, I am on track for this week.
how far behind are you?
