It was gathered from verbal testimonies of living alumni, that the first building
was completed in 1906. It was a two-storey building made of Philippine Mahogany. It
stood at the very heart where the swimming pool of the Vasquez Athletic Field is now
located.
In Moore’s letter dated May 23, 1905, he included the announcement of the
start of the High School classes. The levels in the Provincial High School were:
Preparatory Classes, Intermediate Classes and High School Instruction.
Students admitted to the High School level were those who had satisfactorily
passed the intermediate examination. The early training of the students was not
toward a high school diploma, rather the thrust was on the job and placement and
preparation for competent living. The Surigao School for Secondary Instructions was
free and open to all children of age. The government spent millions of dollars every
year so that the 3R’s are availed by all those who needed much instruction.
From the time the school was established on June 29, 1903, students from the
neighboring towns had come to the capital town of Surigao, to the Provincial School.
The Provincial School consisted of three school levels: Primary, Elementary and High
School. The first 74 students from 18 towns enrolled in the Provincial School where
now stood the Bishop’s Palace (Division Circular UNNO s. 1904).
The High School began with a first and subsequently every year level was added
to its curriculum so that by the School Year 1908-1909 the school has come up with
the first batch of graduates. Only three (3) hopefuls graduated.
Due to staggering financial funding, the Honorable Constantino C. Navarro Sr.,
Congressman, managed to have the Provincial High School. This being the grim
scenario of the school, our athletes need a separate program, the Special Program for
Sports. Thus, the program was implemented, eventually in the year 2000, a kind-
hearted Governor donated a sports building with Specialization in Sports were
provided with that training needed just to develop their skills.
Despite problems met by teachers, like the lack of athletic equipments, the
school gathered several awards and excelled in all events being the overall champion
in the division. There is a reason to hope that in the next year to come our athletes
enrolled in the SPS can regain glory and identity and will dominate the world of
champs.
Being an Empowered School, it has been existing for 115 years now and
geographically situated along Peñaranda Street, a 5-minute walk from the Division of
Surigao del Norte. Spanning at a current total land area of 33,019 square meters, it is
one of the public schools serving the educational needs of one of the province’s fastest
growing area, Surigao City.
With the increasing number of enrolled students, the school is currently offering
various K to 12 programs that cater to the needs of its students: Junior High School’s
Grades 7-10 belonging in Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM),
Special Program for Sports (SPS), Strengthened Technical-Vocational & Livelihood
(STVL), Special Program in the Arts (SPA opened SY 2013 – 2014) and Senior High
School’s Grades 11-12 in different chosen tracks. Senior High School was opened
during SY 2016 – 2017. At the moment, the Senior High School is applying for an
additional Arts & Design Track to the existing tracks: Academic, Sports and TVL.
Surigao del Norte National High School truly affirms its vision-mission of
creating a globally-competent future for all its constituents.
