Teaching Performance Assessment Activity 5

This unit focuses on net and wall games (Table Tennis) and year 8’s were assessed on a
number of areas relating to the sport. The unit ran for 4 weeks consisting of 2 double
lessons a week, therefore, students had adequate time to develop educational outcomes.
Through practical lessons, students aim to;

Moving our body

- Practise, apply and transfer movement concepts and strategies with and without equipment
- Use feedback to improve body control and coordination when performing specialised
movement skills in a variety of situations

Understanding movement
- Participate in physical activities that develop health-related and skill-related
fitness components, and create and monitor personal fitness plans
-
Learning through movement
- Evaluate and justify reasons for decisions and choices of action when solving movement
challenges
- Modify rules and scoring systems to allow for fair play, safety and inclusive participation

Through many forms of assessment, students were accessed on their ability to understand
the tactical problems associated with Table Tennis and understand how these principles can
be applied to other net games. The main focus areas consisted of forehand, backhand, serve
and doubles and singles game play. In addition, students should be able not only execute
these shots, but make significant improvement in their competence in game play and
tactical knowledge.

Below are 2 students I have provided evidence for, one sitting on an A and on sitting on a C
grade level. Although, assessment was done in practicals, through observations, questioning
and using the rubric provided below, ongoing assessment was practiced throughout the
whole unit which essentially had an impact on their grade. Moreover, a pre assessment tool
provided below was used before the unit started to find students readiness level and then
students filled out the test at the end of the unit to see how much information and
knowledge had improved.

Out of the students, grades ranged from A’s to D’s, however, majority of students received
B’s and C’s. Understanding of the learning outcomes may have not been interpreted that
well by students, considering there was quite a difference in grade levels. However, ability
levels may have been a result of this as many students bring strengths and weaknesses to
school, therefore, I cannot assume that grades varied due to student misunderstandings.

Outstanding work Riley. It was great to see that you applied your knowledge of Table Tennis in the classroom and was able to use your
strengths to manipulate the game to your advantage. I was pleased with your effort in Doubles gameplay. However, I would have liked to see
you helping out your team mate along the way as you had more experience than most of the other class mates. I hope you enjoyed the unit
and have a wonderful rest of the year.

I enjoyed seeing your knowledge of the rules of the game (doubles and singles) excel within each lesson. In addition, noticing your
understandings of the tactics and strategies to create scoring opportunities. Although they did not pay off all the time, it was great to see you
were taking risks and going for different shots and being able to reflect on them, so you knew how to improve your performance in the game. I
was very pleased that you were on task majority of the time in class, displayed a positive attitude and showed values of fair play, such as
shaking your opponent’s hands after each game. Well done Georgia.
