ANIMAL ORGAN SYSTEM

Anatomy and Physiology

ANIMALS
• multicellular eukaryotic organisms that
form the biological kingdom Animalia

ANATOMY
study of the biological form (structure) of an
organism

PHYSIOLOGY
study of the biological function an organism
performs
LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION
FOUR MAIN TYPES OF TISSUES

the body animal
CLASSIFICATION OF EPITHELIAL TISSUES
ACCORDING TO CELL LAYERS
Simple epithelium - one layer of cells
Stratified epithelium - more than one cell layer
Pseudostratified epithelium - one layer, but
appears to have 2 or more layers
Transitional epithelium - stratified epithelium that
can be greatly stretched

ACCORDING TO CELL SHAPE

Squamous - flat and thin
Cuboidal – cube-like
Columnar - tall and thin
NERVOUS TISSUES
SKELETAL MUSCLE

tissues responsible for the movement of the body;

under voluntary (conscious) control
SMOOTH MUSCLE

Regulates the size of organs, forces fluid through tubes, controls the amount of light
entering the eye, produces “goose flesh” in the skin; under involuntary (unconscious)
control
CARDIAC MUSCLE

pumps the blood; under involuntary control
