AP LAC – NUMERACY IN SOCIAL STUDIES

As DepEd fully supports the continuing professional development of its teaching

personnel, the AP (Araling Panlipunan) Department had its school-based LAC (Learning
Action Cell) on July 31, 2019 held at the E-Library of Tagumpay National High School. The
aim is to help AP teachers improve the teaching-learning process that will lead to improved
learning among the students.
The integration of different subjects towards a lesson is a common struggle for all teachers.
The speaker, Mr. Leonardo Giray was very gracious enough to share his knowledge and
expertise of his core subject, Mathematics. He enlightened the teachers that maybe,
unknowingly, AP teachers are already integrating Mathematics to their lessons. Below are the
following strategies he shared that show how numeracy concepts and skills can be incorporated
to Social Studies, and these include:
1. The concept of money
2. Measurement
3. Data and Analysis
4. Estimations and Rounding
5. Fraction, Decimal, and Percentage
6. Angle, Symmetry and Transformation
7. Concept of number and dates
8. Sequencing events and dates
9. Concept of time
These concepts can be applied throughout the different AP subject areas like Asian History,
World History, Economics, and Contemporary Issues.
