Activity # 5
How Fast Does Coffee Dissolve in Hot Water? In Cold Water?

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Describe how fast coffee dissolves in hot water and in cold water.
2. Observe in which coffee dissolve faster, in hot water or in cold water.
3. Formulate conclusion based on the activity being performed.

II. Materials
2 cups hot water
2 cups cold water
Instant coffee powder
2 clear plastic cups
2 stirrers
Measuring cups: ½ cup, 1 cup
Measuring spoons: ½ tsp, 1 tsp

III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Procedure
1. Write a hypothesis in a testable form.
______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________.
2. List all the materials you need.
3. Identify variables (for example amount of coffee) that you need to control in order to
have a fair test.
4. Identify the dependent and independent variables.
5. Be sure to record your observations and tabulate them. Write everything you observed
during the dissolving test. These observations are the evidence from which you can
draw your conclusion.
B. Dissolving Procedure
1. Place ½ cup of cold water in a cup
2. Place ½ cup of water in another cup.
3. At the same time, add ½ teaspoon of coffee to each cup.
4. Stir each solid for 10 seconds and observe.
5. Stir for another 10 seconds and observe again.

IV. Observation
 Which are the dependent and independent variables?
Dependent variable: __________________________________________
Independent variable: __________________________________________
 What is the dissolving time of each cup?
Hot Coffee: ________________
Cold Coffee: ________________
 Which dissolved faster?
_____________________________________________________________________

V. Conclusion

 Does coffee dissolve faster in cold water or in hot water?
