Cathodic protection procedure

General
The external surface of pipeline shall be protected with combination an anti-
corrosion coating and Cathodic Protection; where Impressed Current Cathodic
Protection and Mg Anode will be used.
Criteria of Cathodic Protection:
Protective Potential Requirement shall be in accordance with Design Basic to
maintain at least -950 mV and not more than -1.100 mV measured relative to a
Cu/CuS04 reference electrode (CSE).
Scope
Cathodic protection construction activities are divided into the following
standard technological operations:
- Fabricate test station.
- Cable connection to pipelines
- Damaged coating repair, due to cable connection
- DC cable drainage lines To NJB in Qara station.
- Installation of anodes in ground bed well.
- Install Test station
- Install Mg Anode
- Install spark gap at isolation joint.
Cathodic protection installation
1- Cable connection to the pipeline using cad weld method:
The exothermic welding process uses a high temperature reaction charge of
powdered copper oxide and aluminum which when ignite produces aluminum
oxide and super-heated copper.
- Uncoil cupper cable, measure the cable route carefully and then cable cut
to required length.
- Finish cable end to be connected and remove insulation.
- Remove pipe coating over an area sufficient to accommodate the cad weld
mold.
- Weld the cable to the pipe using cad welding method as will be discussed
later.
- Repair coating by the ROYSTON HANDY CAP, when pressed by hand
into position, it forms a thick, highly resistant electrical insulation seal over
the weld, the end of the cable and the surrounding prepared area.
Welding procedure
1. Check mold tag for material to be welded and proper cartridge size to use.
2. Make sure that all surfaces and conductors are clean, dry and are the proper
sizes for the molds application per mold tag.
3. Molds can be dried by heating to approximately 120ºC.
4. put the cable into mold over the pipe.
5. Insert steel disk being sure it is directly centered over the tap hole. Failure
to insert disk into mold or failure to seat the disk properly can create an
improper weld and may cause mold to spew weld metal.
6. Pour proper weld cartridge into crucible being careful not to loosen all the
starting powder while pouring weld metal into mold. Use of wrong weld
cartridge can cause improper welds or damage to molds.
7. Close the lid of the mold and place a small amount of starting powder in
the ignition pocket.
8. Before igniting, verify conductor positioning and that mold is closed
completely.
9. Ignite the starting powder with the flint ignitor. Pull flint ignitor away from
starting powder right after trigger is pulled to keep from fouling flint ignitor.
(Do not place any exposed body part directly over lid or in front of lid
opening.)
10. Wait for 15 seconds before opening mold to allow weld metal to cool.
11. To clean the mold, use a natural bristle brush, soft cloth or newspaper
before making next weld.
2- Test station installation:
- Fabricate test station as drawing 7
- Connect the cables to the test station.
- Connect drain point to the Qara Junction Box.
4- Mg Anode installation
- Install the anode with 1 m from the pipeline in native soil and at depth as
pipeline.
- Anode may be installed horizontally or vertically.
- One anode type 17D3 will be installed at each test post.
- Anode cable will be connected to the test post.
