Statement of Purpose

Computers and latest gadgets have always had a spell on me from my childhood. Every time I
lay my hands on a new device, I have a sudden spurt of curiosity to understand what lies behind
the machine, and how it functions. This inquisitiveness has stayed on with me from my
childhood well into my teens and adulthood. In addition to normal academic work during my
school days, I attended private tuitions to learn and understand about computers, a tad bit more
than my peers. I vividly remember from my childhood the day when our parents bought a
computer with a bulky cathode ray tube monitor, CPU, and other paraphernalia. So, my tryst
with computers and technology have begun in my growing up years.
To give wings to my interests, I pursued computer science engineering in my bachelor’s, and
came out with flying colours by securing 9.2 CGPA. My family has always stood by my side,
and never discouraged me from exercising my freedom and choice in terms of education. I was
born in Mancherial town in the rural district of Adilabad in southern India. My parents are
unlettered, yet they understand the importance of education. The need to do well at school and
the life-changing potential of education have been ingrained into me by my parents in my
childhood. Given that my father is employed as a coal-cutter, a blue-collar job, in Singareni
Collieries and my mother serves as a home maker, they have always believed that education
can significantly alter an individual’s socioeconomic status. Against this backdrop, though our
family lacks material assets and a background of educated ancestry, my parents have made
strenuous efforts to provide the best education in their means to us, three brothers.
Although there were lack of good opportunities for education in my native village, I was sent
to an English-medium school in Mancherial town. I did well at school and secured top marks
and ranks in almost every class. Math and science drew my interest more than other subjects.
I was a rapid learner, and had my classmates visiting me at my home to seek my help with their
lessons. Despite the fact that I did well at school, it was not just about academics, where I
devoured book after book. I complemented my academic activity by participating in lot of
sports competitions conducted at school throughout the year. I also received some prizes in
Kabaddi, an Indian sport. Towards the end of school, I secured CGPA 9.2 in class X.
After class X, when it was time to choose career options, there was no confusion at all. From
my childhood, I have dreamt of studying computer science engineering. Accordingly, I did my
intermediate with Math, Physics, and Chemistry (MPC) stream. Continuing with the academic
success streak, I secured 93.7 percent at the end of two-year intermediate program. Finally, I
landed up in Bachelor’s in Technology with Computer Science as specialization at the Vidya
Jyothi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, one of the premier engineering colleges in our
city. The four years that I spent at this college has been extremely rewarding in terms of
learning, realizing my dreams about career, and shaping my personality as well.
Although the course has offered me knowledge in multiple aspects of Computer Science, two
particular modules Computer Networks and Information Security have fascinated me from the
beginning. In addition to doing well in prescribed courses, I also took interest to join extra
courses, participate in conferences, workshops, and clubs to expand my understanding about
the subjects that I have been passionate about. During the second year of engineering course, I
was selected by my college to attend an Android Development Workshop at the prestigious
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. This opportunity helped me to get in
touch with and involve in the activities as an active participant of another prestigious
organisation called the Computer Society of India in Hyderabad. In the third year, I was
selected for Google Developers program along with another student from my college.
Conducted by the Google company, the said program selected 175 computer science students
from across India to develop a repository of videos made by these students to help the company
understand unique ways as to how smart phones can be made more accessible for uneducated
users. After successfully completing tasks assigned to me, I was invited to a Google summit in
Bangalore, India, along with all 175 students from across India. The summit helped me to learn
a great deal about technology through talks, workshops, and also through interaction with some
of the best minds on programming, software development among others. This rewarding
experience helped to form a student-led Developers Students Society in my college. It has been
helping students in my college ever since to get an opportunity to discuss their ideas regarding
software development, and at times also to carry out further research by winning grants from
the college management.
After successfully completing Bachelor’s in Computer Science, I interned with Uangteman, an
Indonesian company in Hyderabad, which later converted into a full-time job as a software
developer. As part of the job, from January 2019 to present, I have been working using PHP
and Laravel framework. I have been part of a team that was invited to Indonesia for three weeks
to help the company in fixing bugs in its applications.
With an intention to broaden my horizon in areas such as Programming, Networking, Data
Statistics, Applied Computer Science, I want to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science. I am
particularly drawn towards Software Development and Network Security areas.
Besides enhancing my career prospects, I earnestly believe a Master’s in Computer Science
would certainly help in preparing me for a role of Network Architect which I want to eventually
become. I see myself acting as an administrator for systems by designing connections and
maintaining security. In addition, I also want to leverage my experience in Master’s to prepare
for a PhD and also to contribute to the research and development.
After a rigorous research, I have zeroed in on XYZ for several reasons. I am attracted to the
course at the university because of the structure of the programme and a comprehensive list of
subjects it aims to cover. The research and development and integration of theoretical and
practical elements of subjects are other primary considerations to choose the university and the
said course. The top ranking of the university among universities in Canada offering Computer
Science programme and the huge number of international students it attracts also have a bearing
on my decision.
Having my stated my interests, experiences, skill set, I eagerly look forward to joining the XYZ
to pursue my passion in Computer Science. I am sure of improving my knowledge at the
University and preparing for a career of my choice. I am equally confident of enriching my
fellow students’ experiences through sharing and learning.
