Keywords: Bamboo, Portable, Solar energy

The focus of this study is to create a portable rechargeable fan

using bamboo stem which is powered by solar energy. This aims to lessen

the use of plastic materials and maximize the use of bamboo and other

local materials as an alternative to plastic materials. Ultimately, this study

aims at determine: 1. How efficient is the device in terms of: a. Number of

hours working and b. Aerodynamics performance? 2. Is there a significant

difference in the performance between the improvised por0table

rechargeable fan using bamboo stem and a commercially marketed

portable fan in terms of: a. Aerodynamics performance and b. Portability.

3. What is the level of acceptability of the reinvented portable

rechargeable fan in terms of: a. Aerodynamics performance, b. Portability,

c. Noise level, d. Operation, e. Appearance, f. Safety Features? and 4. Is it

feasible to invent portable fan using bamboo stem as an alternative

material?
ix

The researchers made use of a Mixed Method Design. Mixed

Method design is composed of qualitative and quantitative data

gathering/collection. The purpose of this design is to use both the

qualitative and quantitative results to further explain and interpret the

findings. An observation guide, rubrics and an interview guide were used

as the main research instruments in this study. As a result, it helped the

researchers to further analyze the data and suit in answering the research

questions and purpose of this study.

The following were the findings:

1. The B-FAN is efficient in terms of the number of hours working and its

aerodynamic performance. Wherein, the total number of hours working of

the B-FAN is 3 hours and 19 minutes, and the Aerodynamics performance

of the B-FAN offers a maximum wind speed of 15.5 mph.

2. The significant difference in the performance between the improvised

portable rechargeable fan using bamboo and a commercially marketed

portable fan in terms of its Aerodynamics performance and its Portability is

not visible for they both produces enough wind and have an excellent

portability. The B-FAN achieved an overall weighted mean of 3.29 that is

equivalent to excellent adjectival rating.

x

3. Evaluating the six indicators, the B-FAN is Highly acceptable in terms of

Portability, Operation, Noise Level, Appearance and Safety Features while

Moderately Acceptable in terms of its Aerodynamics Performance. The B-

FAN gained an overall weighted mean of 3.71 and an overall adjectival

rating Highly Acceptable in the level of acceptability.

4. The Bamboo portable fan or B-FAN is an innovation of a portable fan. It

is made from bamboo and powered by solar energy.

The following were the conclusion drawn:

1. The B-FAN works efficiently because it can function in a long period of

time continuously and produces enough airflow for the user just like the

commercially marketed portable fan.

2. The B-FAN functions just like the commercially marketed portable

plastic fan in terms of aerodynamic performance and portability and an

excellent alternative to portable plastic fan.

3. The B-FAN have achieved all the requirements for “being accepted” in

highly acceptable manner and presents all the needed characteristics of a

portable fan in an excellent and convenient way. The B-FAN is highly

accepted when it comes to its Aerodynamic Performance, Portability,

Operation, Noise Level, Appearance and Safety which makes it highly

xi

suitable to be recognized as one new competitive portable fan that is

made of bamboo.

4. Based on the findings, it is feasible to invent portable fan using bamboo

as an alternative material. The researchers were able to make a portable

rechargeable fan out of bamboo that is powered by solar energy.
