LECTURE 6

The PRESSURE COOKER is airtight, so pressure builds up inside the

pressure cooker as the liquid inside comes to a boil. The resulting trapped
steam causes the internal temperature to rise more than what it can normally
do at normal atmospheric pressure. Thus, the cooking of hard meat and fibre
is done at a short period of time.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
The pressure of a nitrogen gas inside a rigid tank is 1.5
atmosphere at 30°C. What will be the resulting pressure if the tank is
cooled to 0°C?
G R E S A
(given) (required) (equation) (solution) (answer)

P1= 1.50 atm K = °C + 273

T1=30°C=303 K P2 P2=
P1T2/T1
(1.5 atm)(273K)
T2= 0°C = 273 K
303 K
1.35
atm

According to Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, at constant volume the

pressure of a given quantity of gas is directly proportional to the
absolute temperature. SOLVE THE FF. PROBLEM:
This means that when the temperature of gas increases, its 1. A 30.0 L sample of nitrogen inside a rigid, metal container at 20.0 °C is

the nitrogen after its temperature is increased to 50.0 °C?
