Law
The French chemist Joseph
Gay-Lussac (1778-1850)
- discovered the
relationship between the
pressure of a gas and its
absolute temperature.
Gay Lussac's Law
- states that the
pressure of a given
amount of gas held at
constant volume is
directly proportional
to the Kelvin
temperature.

EXAMPLE:
Determine the pressure change
when a constant volume of gas
at 1.00 atm is heated from 20.0
°C to 30.0 °C.
Given: P1=1.00 atm
T1=20.0°C
T2=30.0°C

T1= (20 + 273) K = 293K

T2= (30+ 273.15) K = 303K. Solution:

Find: P2=? 1 atm 303 1.03

Given: P1= 4.0 atm Formula:
T1= 25°C
T2= 50°C

T1=25°C+273=298K Solution:
T2=50°C+273=323K

At 10°C gas exerts 0.95 atm of
pressure. At what temperature
in celsius will it exert a pressure
of 0.75 atm?
Given: P1= 0.95 atm
P2= 0.75 atm Solution:
T1= 10°C
T1=10+273=283 K 283 k 0.75 atm 223 -50°C

What happens to the pressure of a closed gaseous system when the
temperature increases two-fold?

Your paragraph textYou are trying to dispose of an aerosol

container that has a pressure of 2.00 atm at 20°C. When the
container is disposed of, it may increase to a temperature of 110°C.
What would the pressure be at this temperature?

A family leaves for summer vacation by driving on the highway. The

car’s tires start the trip with a pressure of 3.8 atm at a temperature
of 19°C and a volume of 1.7L. What is the pressure of the tires after
driving, when the temperature within the tire increases to 105°C?
