1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 The purpose of this document is to size neutral grounding resistance (NGR) for limiting earth fault current for
4.16kV system.

2.0 DESIGN BASIS & ASSUMPTIONS

2.1 NGR is proposed to be connected between neutral point of the transformer's 4.16kV winding, to limit the
maximum earth fault current to such value that will not damage the equipment connected to 4.16kV
distribution system and yet allow sufficient flow of current to operate protective relays to clear the fault.

2.2 When designing the neutral earthing equipment it is customary to assume that the highest allowable neutral
current is produced at the point of earthing when one transformer terminal is solidly earthed.

2.3 NGR will be designed as per IEEE-32.

3.0 CALCULATION

3.1 Rated Capacity for System 9 MVA

3.2 System Line-to-Line Voltage : 4160 Volts

3.3 Rated Line to neutral voltage : 4160 V = 2400 Volts

1.732

3.4 Full Load Current (If) : RATED CAPACITY X 1000

1.732 X RATED kV

= 1249 A

3.5 Considering that the earth fault current to reach the full load current is a worst condition
So the earth fault current shall not be high to reach the full load current and shall not be so l to
allow the protection relays to detect the earth fault current.

Taking 20% as an earth fault limiting current = 249.8A

3.6 The neutrals resistor required will be

4 . 16×1000
R= =9 . 6Ω
√ 3×249 . 8
The chosen resistor will be 10 Ω.

3.7 The continuous load current will be

4 . 16×1000
=249 . 9
√ 3×9. 6
For safety, fault current will be chosen as 250 A
4.0 CONCLUSION

4.1 Based on the above , rating of Neutral grounding resistor is selected as follows :

Current rating : 250 A for 10 sec.

Resistance : 10 W

Voltage rating ( Line to neutral ) : 2400 V

Frequency : 60 Hz

Material : Nickel - Chromium Stainless Steel AISI 430

Current withstand duration is selected as 10 seconds as per IEEE 32.
